Half - Built verses

*Chapter Six – Half-Built Verses* The notebook sat between them on the rooftop, unopened. The sky was bruised with early twilight, and the first chill of evening brushed against Eliana’s arms. Kai offered her his hoodie without asking, and she took it without a word. Some things didn’t need permission. “I don’t know how to start,” she said, fingers drumming lightly on the notebook. “That makes two of us.” He was lying flat, hands folded behind his head, eyes on the sky like it had answers. She envied that ease the way he could look weightless even with the world pressing in. Eliana sighed. “What if we’re just chasing something that doesn’t exist anymore?” Kai didn’t flinch. “Then we build something new.” She turned to look at him. “Is that what you want?” “I want the *truth*,” he said. “Even if it hurts.” That hit her somewhere soft. Because wasn’t that what scared her most? That the truth might be uglier than the silence? She finally opened the notebook. On the first page, in Kai’s handwriting, were five words: *“This is where we begin.”* Eliana stared at it for a long time, then added underneath: *“Even if we break.”* Kai smiled. And just like that, the first verse was born.
