Chapter 8: Storm in the Silence

Sofia barely had time to retreat into the bedroom before the door swung open with enough force to rattle the frame. Julian Blackwood filled the doorway like a force of nature. Rainwater still clung to his black coat, dripping onto the hardwood floor. His stormy gray eyes locked onto her immediately, burning with a thousand unspoken things — shock, fury, hunger, and something raw that looked dangerously close to pain. The broken mate bond between them screamed to life. Sofia felt it like a live wire pulled taut, yanking at her chest. Her body recognized him instantly, traitorously. Heat flared under her skin even as her mind screamed at her to stay strong. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Julian’s gaze dropped to her stomach, still mostly flat beneath the oversized hoodie, then slowly traveled back up to her face. The bruise on her cheek from the rogue’s slap seemed to darken under his stare. “Sofia,” he said, voice low and rough, like gravel dragged across velvet. She lifted her chin, refusing to back away even though every instinct wanted to. “Get out.” He stepped inside anyway, closing the door behind him with a soft click that somehow felt louder than a slam. The room suddenly felt too small. Too intimate. His scent wrapped around her — dark cedar, storm winds, and the unmistakable essence of home that she had tried so hard to forget. “I just found out,” he said, taking another step closer. “You were pregnant when you left.” “Correct.” Her voice didn’t waver, even though her hands trembled at her sides. “And before you ask — yes, he’s yours. Not that it matters anymore.” Julian’s jaw clenched so hard she could see the muscle jump. He looked like he wanted to reach for her but knew better. “A son,” he whispered, almost to himself. “A True Alpha heir. And you didn’t think I deserved to know?” Sofia laughed — a sharp, humorless sound that cut through the tension like a blade. “Deserved? You rejected me in front of the entire pack, Julian. You chose Valeria because I was ‘wolf-less.’ A weakness. You told me to go find a human boy to play house with.” Her eyes flashed gold for a brief second. “So no. You didn’t deserve to know.” He flinched. Actually flinched. The great Alpha King, who never showed weakness, looked momentarily shattered. But it passed quickly, replaced by that cold, commanding mask he wore so well. “You’re coming back with me,” he stated, as if the decision had already been made. “Both of you. The pack needs its heir. I need—” “You need nothing from me,” she snapped, stepping forward this time. The power inside her chest stirred, warm and restless, feeding off her anger. “I built a life without you. I have a job. Friends. Safety — or I did, until your enemies came looking for me because of your bloodline.” Julian’s eyes narrowed. He closed the remaining distance between them until they were only inches apart. She could feel the heat radiating from his body. The mate bond pulled harder, whispering treacherous memories of his hands on her skin, his mouth claiming hers. “I was wrong,” he said quietly. The words seemed to cost him. “About many things. But I won’t apologize for protecting the pack. We were weakening. No True Alphas. Valeria was the logical choice.” “Logical,” Sofia repeated bitterly. Tears burned in her eyes but she refused to let them fall. “You ripped my heart out in public for logic. And now that logic is biting you back, you want me to come crawling home?” His hand lifted, hovering near her bruised cheek before he curled it into a fist and dropped it. “You don’t understand the pressure I was under. The elders, the council — they were pushing hard. But seeing you now…” His voice dropped even lower. “Feeling you through the bond again. Knowing you’re carrying my child. It changes everything.” “It changes nothing,” she whispered fiercely. “I won’t be your second choice, Julian. And I sure as hell won’t let my son grow up thinking his father only wanted him once he became useful.” The air between them crackled. Julian’s eyes darkened, pupils dilating as his wolf rose close to the surface. He reached out and gently — almost reverently — placed his large hand over her stomach. The contact sent a shockwave through both of them. Sofia gasped. The spark inside her flared brightly, reaching toward him. For a split second, she felt it — the tiny, strong heartbeat answering the Alpha call of its father. Julian’s breath hitched, his eyes widening in raw wonder. “He’s strong,” Julian murmured, voice thick with emotion. “So strong already.” Sofia shoved his hand away, even though it hurt to do so. “Don’t touch me. Don’t touch us.” The rejection seemed to snap something in him. In one fluid motion, he backed her against the wall, caging her with his arms just like he had that final night by his car. But this time there was no cruelty in his eyes — only desperate, burning need. “The bond is still there, Sofia. I can feel it. You feel it too. Don’t lie to me.” “I hate you,” she breathed, even as her body leaned toward him. “Liar,” he growled, forehead dropping to rest against hers. “The Moon Goddess doesn’t make mistakes. I was the mistake. Let me fix this.” For one dangerous heartbeat, Sofia almost gave in. The pull was so strong. The memory of his love — before everything shattered — wrapped around her like a drug. Then she remembered the public humiliation. The way the entire pack had watched her break. The months of loneliness and fear she had endured alone. She shoved him hard. The power inside her surged with the movement, and Julian actually stumbled back a step, surprise flashing across his face. “I said don’t touch me,” she said, breathing hard. “I’m not your mate anymore, Julian. You rejected me. Make it official with Valeria and leave us alone.” His expression darkened. “Valeria means nothing now. She never did. Not like this.” A knock sounded on the door. Marcus’s voice carried through. “Alpha. We have a situation. One of the captured rogues just talked. There’s a bigger player involved — someone inside our own pack may have leaked information about Sofia’s pregnancy.” Julian cursed under his breath. He looked back at Sofia, eyes intense. “This isn’t over. You’re staying here. Under my protection. Whether you like it or not.” Sofia crossed her arms, power still humming beneath her skin. “Try to force me and you’ll see exactly how ‘wolf-less’ I really am.” Julian paused at the door, looking back at her with a mixture of pride, frustration, and dark desire. “You’ve changed, little omega. I like it. But make no mistake — I’m not losing you twice.” He left, closing the door firmly behind him. Sofia sank onto the edge of the bed, legs shaking. Her hand pressed over her stomach where Julian had touched her. The baby kicked faintly — the first time she had felt it. Tears finally slipped down her cheeks. She was trapped again. Not by rogues this time, but by the man who had already destroyed her once. Only now she wasn’t powerless. And she wasn’t alone. The game had changed. And Sofia Laurent was done playing the victim.
