Zephyra's POV
I cringed. “Yes. I didn’t know at the time, though.”
“Holy s**t,” she breathed. “I can’t believe it.” Then she laughed, her big brown eyes tearing up. “Oh my god, Zee. When you finally decided to let your hair down, you went full throttle and hooked up with one of the richest, most eligible bachelors in the country.”
"Stop laughing," she said. "It was going to be so awkward, particularly during our one-on-one meeting."
She wiggled her eyebrows. "Maybe it would have turned into a literal one-on-one meeting."
The sip of coffee I had just taken almost choked me. "Jovan and I were back together. Plus, I worked for him, so that would have been completely inappropriate," I thought back to Lirael’s icy expression during our last meeting. "Not to mention, I was pretty sure he had no interest in a repeat performance."
"From the minimal juicy details you gave of that night, it sounded like it was pretty intense. Why wouldn’t he have wanted to repeat that? He was a man, wasn’t he?"
"You should have seen the way he was glaring at me. He was not happy to see me."
"Hmm," she pursed her lips. "Could he have been worried you would tell everyone you screwed the boss?"
"When we had our meeting, I probably should have let him know I wouldn’t say anything to anyone."
"Have you considered pretending you didn’t recognize him?" She let out a laugh. "I’m sure that would have driven him nuts."
A smile tugged at my lips, but I shook my head. "I was pretty sure he knew I recognized him."
Freya tapped her nails on the table. "Take this with a grain of salt, since I’ve never been in this situation, but I wouldn’t have said anything unless he raised the topic. You didn’t want to have made it out to be a bigger deal than it was, and if you said nothing and acted completely professional, you would have shown him you were only interested in doing the job he was hiring you for."
I scrunched up my nose. "You think?"
Freya shrugged. "You should have done whatever you felt was right. After all, if it were me, I would have dumped Jovan ASAP and given Lirael Wright the best one-on-one meeting of his life."
I laughed, even as I shook my head. "I didn’t have any interest in him like that anymore. It was a great night, but Jovan and I were really trying to work on things right then."
"Mm-hmm," Freya said. "Did you tell Jovan?"
"No. And I wasn’t going to. It was bad enough telling him I had had s*x with someone while we were broken up. I couldn’t have imagined his reaction if he had known who the man was. He would have hated it, and I didn’t want to jeopardize their working relationship."
"Yeah. Probably a good call. I’m sure having to sit across a meeting room table from the man who screwed his girlfriend’s brains out before he had a chance to wouldn’t have sat well with him. I didn’t have a problem with him getting himself into trouble by trying to one-up his new boss, but I’d have hated for it to have affected you."
"So, you weren’t going to say anything to Jovan?"
She shook her head, miming locking her mouth shut and throwing away the key.
I stood and rounded the table to give her a hug since I hadn’t been tall enough to reach across it the way she had. "Thanks, Freya."
"That’s what friends are for, right?" she said. "Keeping scandalous secrets from each other’s boyfriends."
"Something like that," I said with a laugh. "Come on. Now that you know, you can help me find something professional to wear to my meeting."
"By professional, you mean sexy, right?"
I rolled my eyes at her before heading to my bedroom, with Freya trailing behind me.
But yeah. It wouldn’t have hurt to have looked at least a little sexy when facing down the man who had given me the best night of my life.
So far, anyway.
