Chapter 4: Dinner and Doubts

783 Words
Nour spent the next few days in a haze of excitement and nerves. The scholarship papers were signed. Classes started in two weeks. She had bought new notebooks, a cheap laptop case, and even a simple black dress for the dinner Adam promised. Sara, her best friend, helped her get ready at their tiny apartment. “You look hot,” Sara said, zipping up the dress. “Like, dangerously hot. That billionaire is going to forget his own name.” Nour laughed, but her stomach flipped. “It’s just dinner. As friends.” Sara rolled her eyes. “Friends don’t look at friends the way he looked at you in those Google photos. Be careful, habibti. Men like him play by different rules.” Nour didn’t reply. She stared at her reflection—black dress hugging her curves, hair loose in waves, light makeup. She looked… different. Not poor Nour from the café. Someone who belonged in his world. Adam picked her up at 7 sharp. Black suit, no tie, hair slightly messy like he’d run his hand through it. He smiled when he saw her. “You look incredible.” She blushed. “Thanks. You too.” The restaurant was small, tucked away on a quiet street near the sea. Candlelight. Soft jazz. No paparazzi. Just them. They ordered grilled fish, salad, and wine. Conversation flowed easily—books she loved, companies he was building, dreams they both had when they were younger. “You wanted to be a writer?” he asked. “Still do,” she said. “One day. When things are stable.” He leaned forward. “Things will be stable. You’re going back to university. You’re going to write that novel. And I’m going to read it first.” Nour laughed. “You don’t have to promise that.” “I’m not promising. I’m telling you.” The way he said it—quiet, certain—made her heart skip. After dinner, they walked along the corniche. The sea was dark, waves crashing softly. The air smelled of salt and freedom. Adam stopped under a streetlamp. Turned to her. “I like you, Nour,” he said simply. “More than I expected. More than I planned.” She looked up at him. “I like you too. But… we’re from different worlds.” He stepped closer. “Worlds can meet.” He kissed her—slow, gentle at first, then deeper. His hands slid to her waist, pulling her against him. She kissed him back—hesitant, then sure. The sea roared behind them. The city lights blurred. When they parted, both breathing hard, he rested his forehead against hers. “I don’t want to rush you,” he said. “But I don’t want to let you go either.” Nour smiled—small, brave. “Then don’t let go.” They walked back to his car hand in hand. He drove her home. Walked her to her door again. “Goodnight,” he said, kissing her once more—soft, lingering. “Goodnight, Adam.” She went inside. Leaned against the door. Heart racing. Sara was waiting on the couch. “So?” she asked, grinning. Nour touched her lips. “I think I’m in trouble.” Sara laughed. “Good trouble, I hope.” Nour nodded slowly. The best kind. Across the city, Adam sat in his penthouse, staring at the sea. His phone buzzed—a message from his best friend Elias. “Met the girl yet? The one you’re smiling about?” Adam typed back: “Yeah. And she’s… different.” Elias replied: “Careful, brother. Different can be dangerous.” Adam smiled to himself. Dangerous was exactly what he wanted. And Nour Haddad… was already under his skin. The next morning, Nour went to her first class—English Literature 101. She sat in the back, notebook open, heart full. But when she looked up, she saw him. Rami—her old friend from the neighborhood. Tall, messy hair, paint stains on his jeans. He was in the same class. He saw her. Smiled—warm, familiar. “Hey, stranger,” he said after class, walking up to her. “Rami,” she said, surprised. “You’re here?” “Art major. Minor in English. Small world.” They talked for a few minutes—old memories, shared laughs. When she left, she felt a tug. Rami was safe. Comfortable. From her world. Adam was… everything else. She didn’t know which one scared her more. But one thing was clear: her heart was already divided. And the story between the poor girl and the billionaire… was only getting more complicated.
