Chapter Three: The Shadow Hunters
The rain poured heavily as Amara, Zara, and Nyra raced through the Darkwood Forest.
Behind them, the flames from their destroyed cottage lit the night sky.
The Book of Hades was safely tucked inside Amara's cloak, but the Shadow Hunters were close.
Very close.
"We need to keep moving!" Amara shouted.
Branches whipped against their faces as they pushed deeper into the forest.
Suddenly, Nyra stopped.
"Wait."
The others turned.
"What is it?" Zara asked.
Nyra knelt beside a muddy trail.
Fresh footprints.
Dozens of them.
"They're surrounding us."
A loud horn echoed through the darkness.
The Shadow Hunters emerged from every direction.
Their black armor gleamed in the moonlight.
At their head stood Vexor.
His eyes burned with hatred.
"There is nowhere left to run."
The witches formed a circle.
Purple energy crackled around Nyra's hands.
Lightning danced between Zara's fingers.
Flames surrounded Amara.
Vexor smiled.
"Excellent. Show me your power."
The Shadow Hunters attacked.
Steel clashed against magic.
Amara unleashed a wall of fire that sent several hunters flying backward.
Zara called down lightning from the storm clouds above.
Bolts struck the ground with explosive force.
Nyra raised her arms.
Shadows rose from the earth like living creatures and wrapped around the enemy soldiers.
For a moment, the witches gained the advantage.
Then Vexor entered the battle.
Dark energy exploded from his sword.
The force knocked all three sisters backward.
Amara crashed into a tree.
Zara hit the ground hard.
Nyra barely avoided a deadly strike.
Vexor was far stronger than ordinary hunters.
He advanced slowly.
"The Dark King chose me for a reason."
His blade glowed red.
"I have defeated witches before."
Before he could attack again, the Book of Hades suddenly opened.
A brilliant light burst from its pages.
Ancient symbols filled the sky.
The Shadow Hunters shielded their eyes.
A ghostly figure appeared.
It was Selene, the ancient guardian.
"Run!" she commanded.
"The Frozen Caverns await."
The sisters did not hesitate.
Using the distraction, they escaped deeper into the forest.
Vexor roared in anger.
"Find them!"
The hunt continued through the night.
By sunrise, the sisters reached the edge of the Northern Mountains.
Snow covered the peaks.
Freezing winds howled through the valleys.
Far in the distance stood the entrance to the Frozen Caverns.
According to the Book of Hades, the first fragment of the Heart of Eternity was hidden there.
But they were not alone.
From a snowy cliff, a pair of glowing blue eyes watched them.
A massive creature emerged from the mist.
Its scales shimmered like ice.
Its wings stretched across the sky.
An Ice Dragon.
The guardian of the first fragment.
Zara stared in shock.
"Please tell me that's not what I think it is."
The dragon released a thunderous roar that shook the mountains.
Amara tightened her grip on the Book of Hades.
"It is."
The beast spread its wings.
Snow swirled around it like a storm.
The sisters exchanged nervous glances.
Their greatest challenge had arrived.
