Evelyn burst through the hospital room door and clamped both hands straight around Sophia's throat.
"Why did you do this to me? Give my money back!"
But the man had already slipped away, vanishing out the door in the blink of an eye.
Total, crippling despair crashed over Evelyn. She spun to chase after him, only to have Sophia clamp a cruel grip around her wrist.
"Evelyn, you're desperate for cash, right? How about this... I'll give you all the money you want, but first you have to get on your knees and bow your head to the floor for me."
"In your dreams!"
But the next second, Sophia pulled out a photograph. "This is your grandma's ashes and memorial portrait. I had my people take them from the funeral home. You've been killing yourself to earn money just so you can bury her properly, isn't that right?"
Evelyn's breath caught in her throat. "Where did you take my grandma's ashes!"
"Beg me. Get on your knees and bow your head to the floor to beg me, and I'll tell you."
Evelyn swallowed the searing humiliation burning up her throat and dropped hard to her knees.
As long as she could get her grandma's ashes back for a proper burial, she didn't care what humiliation she had to endure.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Evelyn slammed her forehead against the hard floor, over and over. But Sophia only watched, her eyes glowing with smug satisfaction, and never called a halt.
By the time Evelyn's forehead was swollen and bruised, she forced out the words, "Can you tell me now?"
Sophia's lips tugged into a sharp, evil smile. She grabbed a fruit knife, slashed it across her own wrist, then quickly stuffed the handle right into Evelyn's hand.
"Ah! Evelyn, what are you doing? Adrian, save me..."
Before Evelyn could even process what just happened, a brutal force slammed her backward, throwing her off balance.
Adrian stormed into the room, and drove his boot right into Evelyn's torso with brutal force.
But Sophia just sobbed. "Adrian, I just came here to apologize to Evelyn... I never thought she'd get so jealous that you cared about me. She actually tried to kill me..."
Adrian's eyes burned with cold hatred when he looked at Evelyn. "Evelyn, have you lost your mind? Were you really going to kill Sophia?"
"Adrian, my grandmother is dead! Sophia stole her ashes and her memorial photo! She cut her own wrist!" Evelyn shouted back.
Panic and frustration coiled in Evelyn's chest. She couldn't prove a thing, and she cursed herself over and over for not recording the whole conversation on her phone.
Adria roared, his voice shaking with fury. "Evelyn, I never thought you'd stoop this low just to compete for my affection! You'd even lie about your own grandmother being dead? Aren't you afraid of karma coming for you?"
He brushed right past Evelyn without another glance, clamping a hand around Sophia's bleeding wrist and hurrying out of the room.
Evelyn's legs gave out, and she crumpled to the floor. A thousand tiny, stabbing pains shot through her entire heart, leaving her aching all over.
"No," she told herself. "I can't give up. I have to get Grandma's ashes back!"
Sophia had already admitted she stole them, right? If she called the police, they'd investigate and find the ashes for sure. That's it, she just had to call.
She grabbed her phone, her fingers hovering just above the dial button, when the hospital room door exploded open with a crash.
Adrian stormed back in, his eyes bloodshot. His hand clamped around her arm like a vice made of solid iron, and he wrenched her to her feet, dragging her toward the door. "Evelyn! The blood bank is out of AB-type blood. You're coming with me right now to donate blood for Sophia."
Evelyn kicked and twisted, fighting him with everything she had. "Adrian, let go of me! I won't donate blood for Sophia!"
But she was no match for his brute strength. In seconds, he had her thrown into a chair in the blood collection room and pinned down tight.
"Forcing someone to donate blood is illegal! Adrian, let me go right now!"
On top of that, she'd just sold 400 milliliters of blood not long ago. If she gave more, she could die!
Tears thickened Evelyn's voice as she begged, "Adrian, I'm begging you! I already had 400 milliliters drawn just now, I really can't give anymore!"
But no matter how hard she struggled and begged, Adrian kept his bodyguards pinning her hard against the chair, his gaze cold and unyielding.
"Evelyn, stop throwing a jealous fit. You always stir up trouble every time you see me treat Sophia well, and this time you're going to donate whether you like it or not."
Evelyn's heart felt like it was being ripped clean in two. A bitter smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.
Jealous, jealous.
Ever since she'd seen Adrian's true colors, she'd never been jealous of anything. All she felt was deep regret for misjudging the person she got involved with!
"Adrian, is this really what I am to you? Can't you even believe me a little?"
Adrian shot her down without a second thought, his tone even laced with cajoling coaxing.
"Evelyn, be good. After you donate for Sophia, stop hurting people just because you're jealous."
Evelyn could only watch, helpless, as the thick, cruel needle sank into her arm. Bag after bag of her blood drained out, right before her eyes.
It felt like her very soul was being sucked right out of her body along with it.
An eternity seemed to crawl by before the extraction finally finished.
The last thing Evelyn saw was Adrian's back as he hurried out, clutching the blood bags tight to his chest.
Darkness crept into her vision, and her awareness started to slip away.
As her body slid limply off the chair, she breathed the words out so soft they were almost a whisper.
"Adrian... you're going to regret this..."
