When Evelyn blinked her eyes open, she was lying in a hospital bed. Her mouth was parched with thirst.
She forced her weak body up into a sitting position, only to find several taunting messages waiting for her on her phone.
Meanwhile, Sophia was curled snugly in Adrian’s arms, popping peeled grapes into her mouth that Adrian fed her one by one.
"Adrian, Evelyn was so scary just now... do you think she'd actually hurt me?" she whimpered.
Adrian pinched her nose softly, his eyes brimming with doting affection. "Relax, I've got you. No one's gonna hurt you while I'm here."
Sophia let out a soft, dramatic sigh and gently rested her hand on her flat stomach. "I'm just so scared for our baby. Adrian, I'm carrying your child. I'm already three months pregnant!"
Adrian froze for a heartbeat, his expression swirling with equal parts joy and conflict. "Is that true?"
"It really is! But I don't want my baby to be born an illegitimate child. Adrian, won't you marry me?"
Evelyn's fingers curled so tight around the door frame that her knuckles turned white, and a sharp, sudden pain clenched around her heart as she heard their conversation.
The next moment, Adrian spoke, his voice rough and gravelly. "Sophia, I can't do that. Evelyn is still my lawfully wedded wife. The Carter family has never had a divorce in its history, and getting a divorce would tank the company's reputation."
Sophia immediately burst into shaky sobs. "But what about my baby? What's going to happen to him?"
Adrian fell silent for a long moment, then finally caved. "I'll give you what you want. We can have a fake wedding, and I'll add your baby to the Carter family's household registry."
"That's not enough! It will never be enough!" Sophia's shriek cut sharply through the air, but Adrian just pulled her tighter into his chest.
"I'll divorce Evelyn, marry you properly, and set up a 1 billion trust fund for our baby. After the baby is born, I'll remarry her."
Sophia gave a dissatisfied huff. "And you have to promise me you'll never have kids with Evelyn ever again. After I give birth, you have to get a vasectomy!"
The second the words left her mouth, dead silence swallowed the whole room.
Evelyn stood frozen outside, certain Adrian would never agree to that. But then, his rough voice cut through the silence again.
"Okay."
Evelyn could barely process what she'd just heard.
Just a moment later, Adrian pushed open the door of her hospital room and walked right in, just as she'd expected he would.
He clutched a divorce agreement, disguised as a property purchase contract, in his hand, and sat down on the edge of her bed.
"Evelyn, this is the house I bought for you out in the suburbs. Just sign it. Once your grandmother gets better, we'll move her out there to live with us. Don't get the wrong idea. I'm only nice to Sophia because I see her as a little sister. If you stop being so jealous all the time, we can still live a good life together."
Evelyn signed her name on the paper, numb as a statue, pretending she didn't see the words 'divorce agreement' printed clear as day at the top. Actually, this worked out perfectly for her. It saved her the trouble of asking him for a divorce first.
Adrian let out a relieved breath, and even reached out to stroke her head like he used to, full of false affection.
She dodged his touch with a simple, fluid shift of her head.
"Don't bother. Go keep your little sister company."
Adrian went rigid, and a sharp edge of irritation seeped into his voice. "Fine. You're the one who pushed me away." He pulled the door shut behind him and left.
Evelyn sat on the hospital bed and let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
It was all so ridiculous. He’d spent all this time complaining she nagged him too much, breathed down his neck too often. Now that she’d stopped caring entirely, he’s the one who’s suddenly unhappy about it.
People are just garbage like that.
Over the next few days, Adrian kept Evelyn cooped up in the hospital to 'rest', then told her he was going out of town on business, all so he could parade Sophia around town for everyone to see.
Soon, a trending headline popped up on her phone.
"Adrian Carter, CEO of Carter Group, Proposes to His True Love"
Photos showed the entire villa packed wall to wall with red roses.
Adrian was clutching Sophia’s bandaged left wrist, a gaze dripping with tenderness as he slipped a huge diamond ring onto her finger.
That same diamond ring was the one he’d dropped one million dollars on at a charity lantern auction, outbidding everyone else to win it.
The comment section was flooded with fans gushing over how romantic the couple was. Not a single person even spared a thought for Evelyn, his actual legal wife.
Evelyn’s heart had long gone numb. She didn’t even feel anything when she typed 'Happy forever' into the comment box and hit post.
Right after that, a text popped up from Sophia.
Sophia: See that, Evelyn? Adrian will always choose me first.
Evelyn tapped out her reply with a steady hand.
Evelyn: Congratulations. Can you give me back my grandma’s ashes now?
Sophia replied that they had to meet in person first.
