Chapter 8 The Wrong Silence

1032 Words
Sera Sera Cole didn’t scream. She didn’t throw her phone. She didn’t cry. She sat very still on the edge of her hotel bed, the glow of the screen painting her face pale as she stared at the headline everyone else was devouring. TECH TITAN LUCIEN VALE ATTENDS GALA WITH MYSTERY WOMAN Mia’s shoulder was unmistakable. The tilt of her head. The way she stood like she refused to bend, even when caught off guard. Mia hated cameras. Mia hated crowds. Mia would never have chosen this. Sera’s fingers tightened around the phone. Four days. Four unanswered calls. And now this. “Oh no,” she whispered. “No, no, no.” A knock sounded at the door. Once. Controlled. Sera stood so abruptly the chair scraped loudly across the floor. She didn’t bother checking the peephole. She yanked the door open. Elliot Kane stood in the hallway, immaculate as always dark suit, calm expression, eyes already assessing her face like a threat profile. “You,” Sera said. “Ms. Cole,” he replied. “We need to talk.” She laughed, sharp and humorless. “Oh, you think?” She turned and walked back into the room, leaving the door open. Elliot followed, closing it quietly behind him. Sera spun on him. “You knew.” Elliot didn’t pretend otherwise. “I knew something.” “You knew Mia was with him.” “Yes.” “You knew she didn’t choose it.” Elliot’s jaw flexed. That was all the confirmation Sera needed. She shoved the phone at his chest. “Explain. Now. Or I swear to God I will burn this entire city down with my mouth.” Elliot glanced at the screen once. Then back at her. “Lower your voice.” “Don’t tell me what to do,” she snapped. “You work for him. You don’t work for me.” “I work to keep people alive.” “Then start with my best friend.” Silence dropped between them, heavy and dangerous. Elliot finally exhaled. “Mia is not hurt.” “That’s the bare minimum,” Sera said. “That’s not reassurance.” “She’s under protection.” “From what?” “From becoming collateral.” Sera stared at him. “You’re not answering the real question.” Elliot met her gaze. “Ask it.” “Is she being held?” The word hung there, ugly and sharp. Elliot didn’t respond immediately. That hesitation shattered something in Sera’s chest. “Oh my God,” she breathed. “Oh my God, you let this happen.” “I didn’t let anything happen,” Elliot said, voice tightening. “Lucien Vale does not operate that way.” “You don’t get to define his ethics,” Sera shot back. “I know Mia. She would never disappear without telling me unless she couldn’t.” Elliot stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Ms. Cole Sera listen to me. If you escalate this publicly, you will make it worse.” She laughed again, eyes bright with fury. “You mean for him.” “For her,” Elliot corrected. Sera stopped laughing. “You think I don’t know how this works?” she said quietly. “Men with power close ranks. Women become rumors. If I don’t make noise, she disappears.” Elliot shook his head. “Lucien won’t allow that.” “You keep saying his name like it’s a shield.” “It is,” Elliot said firmly. “Against people far worse.” Sera folded her arms, studying him. “And who shields Mia from him?” Elliot didn’t have an answer. Sera grabbed her jacket. “I’m going to him.” “No,” Elliot said immediately. She paused at the door. “Stop me.” He didn’t move. “That’s what I thought,” she said. “You don’t look like a villain. But you’re complicit.” Elliot’s voice was low. “If you go to him unprepared, you put her at risk.” Sera turned slowly. “Then prepare me.” Elliot hesitated one heartbeat too long. Sera saw it. The crack. “You’re already choosing,” she said softly. “You just don’t want to admit which side you’re on.” Elliot’s gaze darkened. “Lucien believes he’s protecting her.” “That’s what they all say.” “He’s not lying.” “That doesn’t make him right.” They stood there, tension vibrating between them like a live wire. Finally, Elliot spoke. “There are cameras everywhere. Private security. Non-disclosure clauses you can’t imagine.” “I live under NDAs,” Sera said coldly. “Try again.” “This is different.” “Then teach me,” she said. “Teach me how to be dangerous.” Elliot looked at her like he was seeing her for the first time not a celebrity, not a liability. A force. “If I help you,” he said slowly, “I betray him.” Sera stepped closer, eyes locked on his. “If you don’t, you betray her.” The choice hung between them. Outside, sirens wailed faintly. The city moved on. Inside, Elliot Kane made a decision that would follow him for the rest of his life. “There’s a dinner tomorrow night,” he said quietly. “Private. Old money.” Sera’s breath caught. “She’ll be there.” “Yes.” “And him?” “Yes.” Sera’s mouth curved into something fierce. “Good.” Elliot frowned. “You don’t understand ” “I understand perfectly,” she said. “I’m done asking nicely.” She opened the door again. “You’re going to get me an invitation.” “That’s impossible.” She looked back at him. “You said he controls silence.” “Yes.” Sera smiled, sharp and bright. “Then let’s see how he handles noise.” Elliot watched her leave, the weight of what he’d just set in motion settling heavy in his chest. Lucien Vale had built a world on control. And Sera Cole was about to step into it with nothing to lose.
