Chapter 24

620 Words
The door clicked shut. Silence followed. But it wasn’t the same silence as before. Mia lay against her sheets, her breath uneven, her body still humming with something she couldn’t name. Heat spread through her veins. Slow. Deliberate. Building. She turned onto her side, gripping the fabric beneath her fingers as the sensation deepened—not pain, not exactly—but something close. Something consuming. “What… is happening…” she whispered, her voice barely there. The lights flickered. Once. Twice— Then went out. Darkness swallowed the room. The moonlight still filtered through the open balcony, but it felt dimmer now. Distant. Wrong. The shadows shifted. Not moving in a way the wind could explain. Not reacting to anything real. They slid. Soft. Silent. Watching. Mia’s breath hitched, her body arching slightly as the heat inside her flared stronger. The air changed. Dry. Thick. It wrapped around her skin, pressing in close—not suffocating, not harsh— But present. Aware. She should have been afraid. But she wasn’t. Because beneath the burn— There was something else. Something soothing. Something that felt like it knew her. Her fingers loosened against the sheets. Her breathing slowed, even as the heat lingered. And deep inside her— Something opened. Not all at once. Not violently. Slowly. Like a flower unfolding in the dark. Like something ancient stretching awake after centuries of waiting. Mia exhaled softly. The air slipped against her skin— Then into her. Through her pores. Through her breath. Through something deeper than either. And just like that— The world faded. Darkness took her. But it wasn’t empty. It moved. Shifted. Changed. And suddenly— She wasn’t in her room anymore. Stone. Cold beneath her fingertips. Mia stood in a long, dim corridor—walls stretching endlessly on either side, carved with markings that pulsed faintly under her touch. Not words. Not symbols. Something else. She lifted her hand slowly, tracing along the surface. The moment her skin brushed it— She understood. Not in her mind. In her body. In her blood. The markings weren’t meant to be read. They were meant to be felt. A language of essence. Of memory. Of power. Her breath softened. Her steps carried her forward without thought, drawn deeper into the space as the markings shifted beneath her fingertips, responding to her presence. Welcoming her. Calling her. “You see it now…” The voice came from everywhere. And nowhere. Mia stilled. Her heart didn’t race. Her body didn’t tense. Because the voice didn’t feel like a threat. It felt— Familiar. “…Who’s there?” she whispered. Silence answered. But not emptiness. Presence. Heavy. Ancient. Watching her without form. “I’ve been waiting…” the voice continued, softer now. Mia’s eyes drifted forward. There was no figure. No shape. Nothing she could see. But she could feel him. Or it. Or something beyond both. Not a face. Not a body. Just— Awareness. Deep. Endless. Reaching. “Mia…” the voice called again, her name curling through the space like something alive. Her breath slowed further. Her body relaxed. Drawn in. “Let me show you…” The darkness shifted. The corridor stretched— Changed— Opened into something else entirely. Mia took a step forward without thinking. Without questioning. “Open for me…” The words wrapped around her—not commanding, not forceful— Inviting. And something inside her responded. Not fear. Not hesitation. Recognition. Her eyes softened. Her fingers lifted again, reaching forward into the unknown space as the world around her began to dissolve— Reforming into something deeper. Something hidden. Something that had been waiting for her— Long before she was ever born.
