Chapter 14

The stairs were colder. Not drastically. But enough to notice. Each step down seemed to dull the noise from above, the chatter fading into something distant and muted. Mia felt it before they even reached the bottom. A shift. But not like before. Not sharp. Not overwhelming. This was… Soft. Her shoulders relaxed slightly without her meaning to. Her breathing slowed. “…Do you feel that?” Lilly asked quietly. Mia nodded. “Yeah.” But where Lilly sounded uncertain— Mia felt something else. Peace. A calm settling deep in her chest, smoothing out the tension that had been building all day. The moment they stepped into the lower level— It deepened. The space was darker, quieter, the lighting dim and golden against stone walls that looked far older than anything upstairs. But instead of unease— Mia felt… safe. Drawn. Like this place— Whatever it was— Welcomed her. She took a slow step forward, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. “…This doesn’t feel bad,” she said softly. Lilly glanced at her, confused. “It should.” Mia shook her head slightly. “No,” she whispered. And for the first time since entering the museum— The tension inside her eased. As if something beneath the surface… Had finally recognized her. They passed a series of ancient reliefs carved into long slabs of pale stone. Once intricate, now softened by centuries, they still told stories—rolling hills, winding rivers, gardens that seemed to stretch beyond the edges of the stone itself. Figures moved through them in frozen motion, tending fields, dancing beneath carved trees whose leaves had been worn into ghostlike shapes. Lilly slowed, her gaze tracing one of the panels. “These aren’t just decorations.” Mia hesitated this time. “They never are,” she said quietly.
