Chapter 5 Shadows of the Past

571 Words
Haunting memories surged back, paralyzing me with terror, tears spilling freely down my cheeks. Jacob offered no solace. He practically threw me into the car, half-lugging me along like baggage. His eyes were bloodshot, but he couldn't bring himself to meet my gaze. "Wendy, I vowed to Lily's dad that I would look after her. This time, you've crossed the line." As we neared my foster father's place, an overwhelming sense of dread consumed me, as if I were being pulled underwater. Grasping Jacob's arm like a lifeline, I implored, "It wasn't me. I swear it wasn't. I'm begging you! Please, this will cost me my life." Jacob's face remained impassive, doubt written across it. The screech of brakes shattered the silence. The house ahead seemed less a home, more a mausoleum. Jacob hauled me from the vehicle, his voice icy. "It's irrelevant now. Your stepdad assured me that handing you over for half an hour would secure Lily's diploma. You're his daughter. He wouldn't truly hurt you." Before being thrust into the building, an odd serenity settled over me, my face partially hidden in the dim light. "I'm pregnant. Should anything happen, it ends for both of us." Jacob froze, his gaze dropped to my midsection, a flicker of something in his eyes. Lily's voice cut through the moment, "Even deceit has bounds. You would fabricate anything to trick Jacob, wouldn't you?" Without allowing Jacob to absorb her words, she gave me a forceful shove from behind. I crumpled at the feet of polished shoes. The door closed behind me with a foreboding click, sealing my destiny. John Smith's smile sent chills down my spine as he yanked my hair to force me upright. A scream erupted from my lips, stifled as a large hand clamped over my mouth. He hauled me back to my old bedroom. "You worthless degenerate, just like your mother, a deceitful w***e! You really thought you were something, didn't you? How does it feel now that he's the one who tossed you aside?" With those venomous words, he punched me square in the face. For a moment, everything spun into darkness. My hands shook as I fumbled for my phone, desperately calling Jacob. The line connected briefly, but he cut it off after a few rings. Warm blood trickled down my face, and as I stared at the unresponsive screen, a wave of hopelessness crashed over me. John let out a sinister laugh, landing a brutal kick to my stomach, unleashing years of bottled-up fury. "Your mother escaped abroad, but you're left to pay the price, personally delivered back by your own fiancé." I curled up, the sharp pain ripping through me like a thousand shards, as something seemed to leak uncontrollably. John was far from finished. Suddenly, he fixed his lecherous gaze on my chest, attempting to rip my clothes. I lay there, limp as if devoid of life, capturing John's attention that something wasn't right. He froze, glancing down in panic and stumbling backward, shocked, crashing to the floor. Without a second thought, he picked me up and tossed me out like discarded trash. Jacob caught me in his arms, his voice rising in terror as he saw my eyes shut, "Wendy! Wendy! What's happened to you?" Lily sneered, "Enough with the act!" But as she spoke, Jacob felt a wetness against his hands, and a quick look revealed them smeared in blood!
