The tension in the room was palpable as I stood there, having just taken the life of the last remaining creature. Richmond, his voice laced with frustration and concern, didn't mince words.
"Alex, that was stupid and arrogant," he admonished me, his eyes filled with disappointment.
I bristled at his words, my anger flaring as I argued back, getting into his face. "Stupid? Arrogant? They've killed people we know. We can't show mercy."
Mark, standing beside Richmond, nodded in agreement, his voice steady as he supported Richmond's point of view. "Richmond's right, Alex. We need to be smart about our decisions, not let anger cloud our judgment."
The argument grew heated, our voices clashing in a battle of wills. Richmond, his voice filled with calm reason, began, "Alex, we had a chance to learn something from that creature. Maybe we could have communicated with them or found out more about what's happening."
Mark, nodding in agreement, chimed in, "Richmond is right. We don't fully understand these creatures yet.."
I, on the other hand, still filled with anger , retorted sharply, "You are both being naive! We can't trust them. They've already killed so many people we know and love. They have destroyed everything. They are taking Earth with blood and you both stand there and tell me to spare them. what a joke."
Richmond, trying to reason with me, continued, "But what if there's a way to stop this? We can't know for sure unless we try to understand them, and that was our chance too!"
Mark added, "You are right Alex, but our survival also depends on making smart decisions, for the greater good and for the new world."
The argument escalated, our voices growing louder as we each held our ground, torn between fear and the possibility of a new understanding. I ended the argument with a resolute tone, my anger and determination etched on my face. "We must adapt in this new world. These creatures killed my mother and brother and i will not let them kill again"
Richmond replied, "They took my world too"
Forming tears, I turned and walked away, leaving Richmond with a worried and concerned expression. My transformation and adaptation to this harsh reality were becoming more apparent.
Returning to the room where Emily and the kids had taken refuge, I embraced them, holding Alicia, Roland, and Steve close, and reassuring Katie and Desmond that they were safe. They had heard the gunshots, and worry filled their young faces.
Kneeling down to their level, I looked into their eyes and offered comforting words. "Don't worry, kids. I have everything under control. Nothing will happen to you while I'm here to protect you."
The children smiled, their trust in me evident. I kissed Emily, and she noticed the blood on my face and clothes. Concern flickered in her eyes as she asked what had happened. With unwavering confidence, I reassured her, "Emily, you and the kids are going to be safe with me. I won't let anything happen to any of you''.
Day 10
After three days of rest and preparation, we were ready to continue our journey. We had rested, consumed the meat we had found in the abandoned meat market, and packed away the rest, knowing it could last us for a full month. Food was no longer a pressing concern, but we still had to ration our water supply carefully.
We loaded up into Mark's truck, knowing that our destination was Richmond's brother's camp. With our supplies and weapons in tow, we set off on the road once again.
Day 12
Two days later, we were still on the road, making slow but steady progress toward our destination. We stopped intermittently to rest, with Mark and Richmond taking turns as the driver, allowing each other to rest as needed. It was a constant cycle of driving, resting, and keeping a vigilant eye out for any potential threats on the desolate highways.
Emily and I sat together , tucked up in the back of the truck, our bodies close for comfort and warmth. It felt like a strange, post-apocalyptic road trip, with the world around us transformed into a landscape that felt both familiar and surreal.
As we continued our journey through this fallout-like atmosphere, our determination to reach our destination grew stronger with each passing mile.
Day 19
As a week passed on our road trip, we continued to ration our supplies carefully, making stops to scavenge for necessities whenever possible. Along the way, we encountered numerous alien creatures, but our vehicle's speed had proved to be an advantage, allowing us to stay one step ahead of them. However, our luck took a turn for the worse when we finally ran out of fuel.
Frustration and worry filled the air as we realized our predicament. Richmond broke the silence, his voice heavy with concern. "We have about three hours left of walking distance from here. We could try to find another vehicle, but with this many people, we'd need a van or a truck similar to this one."
Emily, always thoughtful and protective of the children, chimed in, "It's too risky to split up with the kids. We need to find a solution together."
I took a moment to think, then proposed a plan. "Let's split up temporarily. Emily, you stay here with the kids. Mark and I will go search for fuel or another suitable vehicle. We'll return as soon as we can."
I leaned in and kissed Emily, assuring her, "I'll be back, Emily. You stay safe."
I looked at Richmond "Protect them"
Richmond nodded "With my life"
We had stopped near a dense woods, and as we ventured deeper into the forest, we stumbled upon a cabin about a 20-minute walk in. Mark approached the cabin cautiously, and I followed closely behind, scanning our surroundings for any signs of danger. Mark knocked on the cabin's door, but there was no answer.
I remained outside, keeping watch and staying on guard. The silence of the woods was broken by the sound of something approaching rapidly. My instincts kicked in, and I readied my rifle. As the creature came into view, I recognized it as one of the alien beings that had been pursuing us. A sense of grim determination washed over me, and I whispered to myself, "Atta boy."
Without hesitation, I took aim and fired a shot from my rifle. The shot from my rifle hit the creature with devastating force, blowing it to pieces. Mark shouted with enthusiasm "Your a natural with that bad boy!" I responded "The experience comes from my buddy chuck, the nerd of firearms, I hope he is okay" Mark chuckled and joked "He must be fine if he has an arsenal of weaponary" We both laughed and then turned our attention back to the remnants of the creature.
Standing over it, I stared down, noting the eerie resemblance it bore to Venom from the Spider-Man comics. A chuckle escaped my lips as the resemblance struck me. I couldn't help but make the comparison, referring to it as a "symbiote" due to its appearance and the violet blood that oozed from its remains. Mark busts in the cabin and joyous shouts rang through the woods as he discovered both fuel and shotguns. The find of shotguns promised to be invaluable for close combat, and it lifted our spirits considerably. Additionally, we had gathered some vegetables from the area around the cabin, providing us with much-needed sustenance.
With our supplies secured, we made our way back to the truck. As we reunited, I shared the name I had given to these alien creatures, calling them "symbiotes." Mark looked at me, smile on his face as he chuckled at the description. It was a moment of camaraderie in the face of adversity, a reminder that even in this harsh new world, there could be moments of humor and connection.
Day 20
A couple of hours later, in the early dark morning, we finally arrived at our destination—a massive walled compound illuminated by bright lights, resembling a prison or fortress. Relief washed over us as Richmond and I exited the truck, making our way toward the compound.
I couldn't contain my emotions and kissed Emily, holding her hand tightly as we walked together. It was a moment of hope and anticipation, a sense that we had reached a place where we might find safety and shelter. As Richmond approached the compound, a sudden alarm blared, and before we knew it, we were surrounded by armed men, their weapons trained on us. The children clung to Emily and me, fear etched on their faces, mirroring our own uncertainty.
Richmond raised his hands, shouting to the armed men, "I'm looking for Frank! He's my brother! We mean no harm!" The armed men, realizing that we meant no harm, lowered their weapons. A man who appeared to be a general among them approached us, and he noticed the children. Without saying a word, he signaled for the massive wall to be opened, providing us with a way to enter the compound.
As we walked inside, a figure emerged from the group and shouted, "Richie!" It was Richmond's brother, Frank. The two siblings were reunited, and there was a mix of relief and joy in the air. We had finally found safety and sanctuary within the walls of this compound, and it was a moment of hope in an otherwise bleak world.
