Marisol's POV:
"I don't think you are as human as you think though." He said suddenly and I flinched.
"What do you mean?" I said as I met his eyes. He frowned softly at me. Despite this, his eyes were still soft. He looked at me like I had seen in cheesy romance movies. Could he truly love me so easily?
"Your scent. It's not normal for a human to smell like a wolf." I had no idea about any of that stuff.
"Maybe one of my parents was a wolf?" I offered and he shook his head.
"Can't be. You would be a wolf then. Even with a human mate. A wolf always has pups. Even if you were mixed, you might have a weaker wolf, but you would still be a wolf."
"Every time?" I asked and he nodded. I guess that made sense. So the wolf genes were dominant. It would make sense if they were some sort of magic gene, I guess. His gaze shifted suddenly as if he saw something I couldn't. "What?" I asked, and he flinched, and his cheeks tinted pink for the briefest moment. So fast I wondered if I had imagined it.
"Nothing." He said quickly and crossed his arms over his chest. I shook my head lightly and went back to my food. It was very good. The cook was quite talented, with a steak for sure. I wondered briefly what other sort of things he could make.
Once I was finished eating, he led me upstairs and knocked on a door. A girl answered, and she looked slightly surprised to see us there. She had the same bright green eyes the other girl had, but her hair was a fiery red.
"Do you have anything my mate could borrow to wear?" River asked her and she looked at me. I felt self-conscious as she looked at me with a small frown. My clothes were ripped, and I had nearly forgotten about it.
"Just one outfit?" She asked as she motioned for me to come into the room. I stepped forward past her.
"And something to sleep in for now," he said, and she nodded as she shut the door. He didn't look happy about that though. She turned to me with a small smile.
"I'm Nina, by the way. It's nice to meet you." She held out her hand to me and I shook it.
"Marisol," I said, and she smiled wider. She turned to her closet and dug through it for a moment.
"You look like we have a similar size. Try these." She handed me a pair of jeans and I pulled off my skirt as she turned to look through her closet again. I pulled on the jeans. They were a little long on me, but they fit pretty well. She turned to hand me a t-shirt. "Here. That should work as well." She frowned at my ankles. As I took the shirt off, she dropped down and rolled the jeans up. "You are on the shorter side." She commented casually as I pulled off my top.
"I think you might be just extra tall," I said and she giggled. I knew I was below average in height, but I never cared. I pulled the shirt over my head, and it was loose, so it fit fine. Nina had a larger chest than me. She stood and looked over the outfit on me.
"That should work for now until you get some new stuff. Let me get you something for sleeping." She pulled open a drawer and pulled out what looked like an oversized t-shirt and some short shorts. She handed them to me. "Unless you want something cuter?" She asked suddenly and I blushed bright red.
"No, this is fine," I said as I held the clothes to my chest. "Thank you for that." She waved off my words as she walked towards the door.
"I have tons of clothes. My sister is always borrowing them too. Have you met Maddie?" I nodded and she looked at my arm. "I suppose you must have if you got treated. She takes a bit to warm up to new people." I don't think she would ever like me honestly from the way she seemed to dislike that I was human. Nina opened the door and River was leaning against the opposite wall looking frustrated. As I stepped out, he frowned deeply.
"What's wrong?" I asked as I looked at Nina as he stormed off suddenly. She giggled lightly.
"You smell like me now. He'll get over it. Boys and their mates." She giggled again and shook her head softly at his back.
"Marisol. Come along." He said as he looked back at me. Nina rolled her eyes lightly with a smile. I gave her a soft wave as I rushed to catch up to him. She seemed nice. One of the friendly faces of this place. We walked to the end of the hall to the only door, and he opened it for me. "Put those on the bed." I stepped into the massive bedroom. It was three times the size of Nina's, and it had a bathroom too. I put the clothes on the massive bed.
"Whose room is this?" I asked as I turned to him.
"Mine." He said easily, and he motioned to the bathroom door. "You can get cleaned up over there if you like. I don't think Maddie did more than wipe your face and wounds." I lifted my hand to my face. Was my makeup gone? I felt self-conscious immediately and rushed for the bathroom. When I saw my freckles reflected back at me, I frowned.
"I don't suppose you have any makeup?" I asked as I turned, and he frowned deeply at me.
"What for?" He asked as he stepped over and leaned against the door frame.
"So I can look nice," I said, as it was obvious. If I was going to meet people, I wanted to look my best. Which meant covering the freckles dotted over my cheeks and nose mostly. He frowned even deeper than ever.
"You already look nice, Marisol," he said as he reached out. His finger brushed over my cheek as he drew an imaginary line between my freckles. I blushed deeply. "You only had your freckles covered before, anyway." He pointed out and I stepped back. His eyes filled with disappointment as he dropped his hand back to his side.
"And? I don't do a lot of makeup."
"You don't need to cover them. They only add to your beauty." He said like it was obvious, and I looked away.
"How can you say things like that so easily?"
"Because you are my mate. Because every part of me cares for you. More than that, I actually like freckles anyway." I looked back at him and he smiled softly.
"So you are saying you are biased," I said bluntly and he chuckled. It was a nice sound, especially since he could seem so serious.
"Perhaps." He looked me over. "How old are you?" He asked suddenly.
"Does that matter to you?" He shrugged and I knew it didn't. He was just trying to get to know me. "23," I said and he nodded. "How about you?"
"I just turned 25. I've been Alpha for about a year and a half." I furrowed my brow at the added info. "Alphas are typically older. I am the youngest Alpha my pack has seen in many generations."
"That's a good thing though, right? It means you earned it." He smiled with pride and I turned to check my face for dirt. I turned on the water and wiped at my hairline with my fingers. Suddenly, a washcloth was placed next to the sink and I looked at River. "Thanks." He nodded, and I wet the cloth and used it to finish cleaning my face. I washed my hands to get the dirt out from under my nails too. I wiped off my uninjured arm and decided that would be good enough for now.
"Will you let me introduce you to the pack tonight?" He asked as I put the washcloth down. I turned back to him. "Even if you do decide to leave you'll still be my fated."
"I don't know. I'm tired. Could I just skip?" He frowned deeply and sighed.
"If you like. I won't force you to do anything." He relented easily. I felt a little bad for him, but I didn't want to meet the whole pack or anything like that. I wanted to go home. I just had to put up with him trying to win me over for a couple of days and then I could return.
After I was clean, I hung out in his room flipping through channels on his TV mindlessly. Eventually, he left to talk with everyone and I changed into the sleepwear. He could sleep on the couch, I decided as I lay in the bed. If he was a gentleman, as he seemed, he would. I yawned softly and closed my eyes. Little did I know that the morning would bring about events that would change everything I once thought I knew.
