You Can't Save Me

The word help still echoed in my head. It didn’t sound like a threat. It didn’t sound like a trap. It sounded real. Too real. I stepped forward before I could stop myself. “Wait,” Kael said immediately. But I didn’t. Because if that was really a person— Then we couldn’t just stand here and watch them fall apart. “They’re still conscious,” I said. “We can’t ignore that.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “And if whatever is inside them spreads?” I hesitated. Because that— That was the risk. But the figure on the ground trembled again, their breathing breaking into uneven gasps. “…please…” That decided it. I moved closer. Slow. Careful. The warmth inside me reacted instantly—pushing, warning—but I didn’t let it stop me. “I’m not going to hurt you,” I said softly. The figure flinched anyway. Not from me. From something inside them. Kael stayed close behind me now, alert, ready. “Don’t touch them yet,” he said. “I need to understand what’s happening first.” I nodded slightly. But the moment I got closer— I felt it. Stronger than before. That corruption. It wasn’t just inside them. It was moving. Spreading. Alive. My chest tightened. “This isn’t normal,” I whispered. Kael didn’t answer. Because he could see it now too. The figure’s skin flickered faintly—not glowing like power— Distorting. Like something beneath it kept shifting. Breaking through. “They said someone did this,” I said. “Yes.” “But not the Sovereign.” Kael’s expression darkened further. “Which means we’re dealing with something worse.” The thought sent a chill through me. The figure’s hand shot out suddenly—grabbing my wrist. My breath caught. “Don’t—!” Kael moved instantly— But I froze. Because the moment they touched me— I felt it. Not my power. Theirs. Broken. Chaotic. And for a split second— It tried to connect. My chest tightened violently as the warmth inside me reacted hard— Pushing. Rejecting. But the corruption didn’t pull like my power. It forced. Pressed. Like it was trying to get in. My eyes widened. “Kael—!” He grabbed my arm, pulling me back sharply. The connection snapped. But the figure screamed— A raw, broken sound that didn’t sound human anymore. Their body convulsed violently, their grip releasing as they collapsed again. The air shifted instantly. Darker. Heavier. The flickering beneath their skin grew stronger. More aggressive. “It’s reacting,” Kael said. “To what?” “To you.” My heart dropped. “No…” But it made sense. My power rejected it. And now— It was reacting back. The figure’s body twisted slightly, their breathing turning into something else. Not gasping. Not struggling. Changing. “You need to move back,” Kael said firmly. I didn’t argue this time. Because I could feel it. That thing inside them— It wasn’t breaking anymore. It was taking over. The figure’s head lifted slowly. Too slowly. Unnaturally. Their eyes flickered again— Then went still. Not human. Not unstable. Controlled. And that was worse. A smile stretched across their face. Wrong. Completely wrong. “Well…” the voice that came out wasn’t theirs. It was deeper. Distorted. “…that didn’t work.” My chest tightened. “That’s not them anymore,” I said. Kael nodded once. “No.” The thing tilted its head slightly, studying me. Not confused. Interested. “Your energy…” it said slowly. “…it hurts.” The warmth inside me surged again. Sharp. Reactive. “Good,” I said, my voice steady despite everything. It smiled wider. “Then let’s see how long you can hold it.” The air shifted violently— And just like that— This wasn’t about saving anyone anymore. This was a fight. 😈🔥
