It Found Me First

550 Words
The feeling didn’t fade. It lingered. Sharp. Unsettling. Like something had brushed against me… and didn’t fully let go. “Something felt that,” I said, my voice lower now. Kael didn’t deny it. “I know.” That was all he said. And somehow, that made it worse. Because if Kael wasn’t trying to reassure me— Then this was serious. “Then we need to move,” I added quickly. “We will,” he replied. “But if you run every time your power reacts, you’ll never learn to control it.” I frowned. “So what do you want me to do? Just stand here and wait for whatever that was to come find me?” His gaze held mine. “If it comes,” he said, “then you face it.” The words sent a chill through me. Before I could respond— A sudden sound echoed from outside. A sharp crack. Then another. Closer. Heavier. My body tensed instantly. “That doesn’t sound like waiting,” I muttered. Kael’s expression hardened. “They’re here.” The warmth inside me surged immediately in response. Not slow. Not calm. Fast. Alert. Like it recognized the danger before I fully did. Another loud impact hit the entrance, the already damaged door splintering further. A low growl followed. Deep. Multiple. My heart started racing again. “Stay behind me,” Kael said, stepping forward. But this time— I didn’t move back. “No.” His head snapped slightly toward me. “Lira—” “I said no,” I repeated, my voice steadier than I felt. The warmth pulsed again. Stronger. Not wild. Focused. Like it was pushing me forward instead of pulling me back. “They didn’t come for you,” I said quietly. “They came for me.” The next hit shattered what was left of the door. Wood broke apart as two creatures rushed in first, followed by another behind them. Their glowing eyes locked onto me instantly. No hesitation. No confusion. Target found. My breath caught. But I didn’t freeze. I lifted my hand slowly, focusing on that energy inside me. Not reacting. Deciding. The creatures lunged. Fast. Violent. But this time— I was ready. The energy surged forward, stronger than before, forming a force that met them mid-air. The impact was louder this time. More controlled. They didn’t just get thrown back— They stopped. Suspended for a second. Then slammed hard against the wall. The ground shook slightly. Silence followed. But not complete. Because more were coming. I could feel them. Outside. Waiting. Watching. Testing. Kael stepped beside me now instead of in front. A silent shift. A new understanding. “You held it longer,” he said. I nodded slightly, my breathing steady despite everything. “I didn’t panic.” “No,” he agreed. “You didn’t.” The warmth inside me settled again. Not gone. But listening. Controlled. And for the first time— I understood something clearly. This power wasn’t just reacting to danger. It was evolving through it. And if that was true— Then every fight… Every attack… Was making me stronger. Which meant— They weren’t just hunting me anymore. They were helping me become exactly what they feared. 😈🔥
