They Found Me

The knock came again. Louder this time. More forceful. Not the kind of knock you ignore. My heart started racing immediately. “Zayden…” I whispered. He didn’t look back. But I saw it in his posture— That shift. The calm version of him was gone. Replaced by something sharper. More dangerous. “Stay behind me,” he said quietly. “I’m not hiding while you—” “Do it,” he cut in. His tone left no room for argument. I swallowed my protest and moved slightly back, my chest tightening as the tension in the room grew heavier. Another knock. Then— The handle moved. Slowly. Deliberately. My breath caught. “They don’t wait,” Zayden muttered. The door opened. And two men stepped inside. Dressed in dark clothing, their presence instantly filling the room with something cold. Something wrong. Their eyes scanned quickly— Then landed on me. My stomach dropped. “There she is,” one of them said. The way he said it made my skin crawl. Not relief. Not surprise. Recognition. Like they had been looking for me. My hand moved instinctively to my stomach again. That warmth pulsed faintly. Reacting. Zayden stepped forward, blocking their view of me almost completely. “You’re not supposed to be here,” he said. His voice was calm. Too calm. One of the men smirked. “Neither are you.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. “We’ve been tracking her energy,” the second man said. “You really thought you could hide it?” My heart pounded harder. Tracking? Energy? Zayden didn’t respond. But I could feel the tension building around him. Like something was about to snap. “She comes with us,” the first man added. “No,” Zayden said. Simple. Firm. Final. The air shifted instantly. “You don’t get to decide that,” the man replied. Zayden’s expression didn’t change. But something in the room did. Something invisible. Powerful. “You can try to take her,” he said quietly. My breath caught. Because the way he said it— Wasn’t a challenge. It was a warning. And something told me— They should have listened. Because whatever Zayden really was… He wasn’t afraid of them. At all. 😈🔥
