It Didn't Leave

590 Words
The silence after it ended didn’t feel like relief. It felt wrong. Too still. Too quiet. Like something was missing— Or worse… Like something was still there. I stared at the body on the ground, my chest rising slowly as I tried to steady my breathing. It wasn’t moving. Not twitching. Not reacting. Just… empty. Kael stepped forward carefully, crouching slightly as he checked it. “It’s gone,” he said. But his voice didn’t sound convinced. “Gone where?” I asked. He didn’t answer immediately. Because he didn’t know. And that was the problem. I wrapped my arms slightly around myself, the warmth inside me finally settling—but not completely. It wasn’t reacting anymore. But it wasn’t calm either. It felt… alert. Like it was waiting. “It said it didn’t need the body,” I said quietly. Kael nodded once. “That means it can move freely.” A chill ran down my spine. “So it can just… jump from one person to another?” “Or something worse.” Silence followed. Because somehow— That felt more likely. I looked back at the body again. “What about them?” Kael’s expression hardened slightly. “They’re gone.” The words landed heavy. Not dramatic. Not loud. Just final. My chest tightened, but I didn’t argue. Because deep down— I knew. Whatever that thing was— It hadn’t just taken control. It had destroyed what was left. “This wasn’t supposed to exist,” Kael muttered. “You said that before,” I replied. “What does it mean?” He stood slowly, his gaze distant for a second. “It means whatever created that…” he gestured toward the body, “…it’s not part of anything we know.” Not the Sovereign. Not the creatures. Something else. Something new. My stomach tightened. “And it said it was learning.” Kael looked at me sharply. “Yes.” “And it learned from me.” The realization settled heavily between us. Because that meant— It wasn’t just dangerous. It was evolving. Based on us. Based on me. “That’s not good,” I said. “No,” Kael agreed. “It’s not.” Silence fell again. But this time— It didn’t feel empty. It felt watched. The warmth inside me shifted slightly— Not reacting outward. But aware. My head lifted slowly, my gaze scanning the space around us. “Do you feel that?” I asked. Kael stilled. “…Yes.” The air didn’t move. Nothing changed. But something— Something was there. Not physically. Not visibly. But present. Observing. A faint pressure settled at the edge of my senses. Not attacking. Not reaching. Just… Watching. My chest tightened. “It’s still here.” Kael’s jaw clenched slightly. “No,” he said quietly. “It’s not here.” A pause. Then— “It’s looking.” The words sent a chill through me. Because suddenly— This wasn’t over. It wasn’t even close. That thing wasn’t just gone. It had stepped back. Pulled away. But it hadn’t lost interest. If anything— It had gained it. I exhaled slowly, my eyes narrowing slightly. “Then next time…” I said quietly. Kael glanced at me. “…we don’t let it leave.” The warmth inside me pulsed once. Sharp. Ready. Because now— This wasn’t just survival. This was something else. Something hunting. And for the first time— We weren’t the only ones doing the hunting. 😈🔥
