It Wasn't Me This Time

600 Words
The quiet didn’t last. It never did. But this time— It wasn’t because we pushed too far. It wasn’t training. It wasn’t even intentional. It just… happened. I was standing near the far wall, trying to calm my thoughts, trying to ignore the restless energy still lingering inside me. Kael hadn’t moved much either. The tension between us had settled into something quiet— But not gone. “I said I’d stop,” I muttered under my breath. More to myself than to him. But the moment the words left my mouth— The warmth inside me stirred. Not gently. Not slowly. Sharp. Sudden. My breath hitched. “Kael…” He looked up instantly. “What is it?” “I didn’t do anything.” The energy surged again. Harder. Faster. My eyes widened slightly. “It’s happening again.” Kael’s expression changed immediately. “Shut it down.” “I’m not even using it!” The panic in my voice wasn’t controlled this time. Because this— This wasn’t like before. I hadn’t reached for it. I hadn’t triggered it. It moved on its own. The warmth flared, spreading through my chest, down my arms— But this time— It wasn’t searching for Kael. It wasn’t pulling toward him. It was reacting to something else. Something outside. A low sound echoed from beyond the broken entrance. Faint. But enough. My body went still. “You feel that?” I asked. Kael’s gaze shifted toward the doorway. “Yes.” Another sound. Closer this time. Then— A presence. Not the same as before. Not like the creature. Not like the Sovereign. Different. Weaker— But wrong. The warmth inside me surged again, sharper now, almost aggressive. Like it recognized something. Like it didn’t like it. “What is that?” I whispered. Kael’s expression darkened. “That’s not one of his.” My chest tightened. “Then what is it?” Before he could answer— A figure stumbled into the doorway. Not rushing. Not attacking. Falling. Its body hit the ground hard, barely catching itself as it struggled to stay up. My breath caught. It wasn’t like the others. No glowing eyes. No controlled movement. Just… unstable. Like something had gone wrong. “Stay back,” Kael said immediately. But I didn’t move. Because the moment I looked at it— The warmth inside me reacted violently. Not pulling. Not reaching. Repelling. My body tensed as the energy pushed outward on its own, forcing a wave of pressure through the room. The figure cried out, collapsing fully this time. I stepped back slightly, my heart racing. “I didn’t do that,” I said. Kael didn’t argue. “I know.” The figure on the ground trembled slightly, its breathing uneven, like it was struggling to hold itself together. And then— I felt it. Clear. Strong. Something inside it was breaking. Shifting. Wrong. The warmth inside me pulsed again— But this time— It didn’t feel hungry. It felt reactive. Defensive. Like it was trying to push something away. “What’s happening to it?” I asked. Kael’s jaw tightened. “It’s unstable,” he said. “Like something corrupted it.” A chill ran through me. Because suddenly— This wasn’t just about my power anymore. This was something else. Something spreading. Something dangerous. And whatever it was— My power wasn’t drawn to it. It rejected it. And that meant— This wasn’t something I could control. It was something I might have to face. Whether I was ready or not. 😈🔥
