CHAPTER 19

CHAPTER 19 — THE EDGE OF CONTROL The forest behind us was quiet—too quiet. Every branch, every rustle, every whisper of wind was a reminder that danger didn’t rest. But my eyes weren’t on the shadows. They were on her. Selene walked ahead, notebook clutched to her chest like a shield, oblivious to how much I hated seeing her walk away from me—even for a second. My wolf snarled inside, claws scraping against the edges of my restraint. Her heartbeat. Warm. Steady. Trusting. I wanted it all. But I was no ordinary man. And the world outside this forest would never understand her like I did. Not yet. “Kael…” she murmured, breaking my thoughts. I froze. She wasn’t looking at me, not really. She was just… talking to herself. But the way her lips moved, the subtle tilt of her head, the delicate arch of her neck—everything about her was designed to break me. I stepped closer, silent. Predatory. Meant to warn. Meant to protect. Meant to claim. She finally turned, and my name slipped from her lips again. Soft. Hesitant. An invitation. The air between us tightened, charged. I could smell her fear, her curiosity, her need. All of it rolled together like a scent I couldn’t ignore. I wanted to be gentle. I wanted to be careful. But the wolf inside me refused to be polite. “Selene,” I said, voice low. Smooth. Dangerous. “Stay close.” She tilted her chin, eyes daring me. A faint smirk tugged at her lips. “Or what?” The words hit me like fire. My wolf growled, but my human mind had to remind him: control. Yet every instinct screamed. Every muscle itched. I wanted to close the distance, press her against a tree, and show her just how much I’d protect her… how much I’d take. My hand brushed her arm accidentally—or maybe not. Her pulse jumped. Her breath hitched. “Kael…” Her voice softened, almost a whisper. Fragile. Tempting. Undoing me. I bent closer. Our faces inches apart. The world faded. Only her remained. Only the pull between us, fierce and raw. Her lips grazed mine. Just a touch. A tease. And something inside me snapped. Not a controlled growl, but a raw, desperate demand. My hands were on her waist before I thought better of it. Her body pressed against mine, warm, soft, alive. She didn’t pull away. Didn’t resist. And that made me even more dangerous. I crushed my lips to hers. Slow. Intentional. Fierce. Every kiss a promise I wasn’t ready to name. Every touch a warning to the world that she was mine. Her hands threaded through my hair. Fingers tangled. Her body arched toward mine. Desire laced with fear, excitement, and trust. For a moment, I forgot the forest. The shadows. The threat that never slept. It was just her and me. Wild and human. Dangerous and alive. When we finally broke apart, gasping, my forehead pressed against hers, she whispered: “Kael… I—” I silenced her with a rough kiss, fierce, possessive, and yet reverent. I was a predator. She was my prey. And for the first time, I didn’t care which was which. Because right now, she was mine. Completely. And the world could burn around us. But deep inside, a warning rumbled—the forest wasn’t finished. The real danger was still waiting. And soon, it would follow us… anywhere we went. And when it did, there would be no hiding. No control. Only survival. And each other.
