The sharp, rhythmic blare of an emergency alarm echoed across the manicured grounds of the estate, cutting through the night air like a siren.
Red security floodlights swept across the terrace stone, washing Mateo’s sharp profile in blood-colored light. Within ten seconds, three armed enforcers cleared the heavy glass doors of the dining hall, their submachine guns drawn and held at low-ready.
"Don Mateo," the lead guard reported, his breath short. "Perimeter lockdown is engaged. The harbor vault incident triggered an automated security freeze across all secondary nodes—including the estate central server."
Clara stepped back slightly, keeping her expression locked behind a mask of startled shock. Inside her mind, however, her tactical instincts were firing at full speed.
A secondary node breach means whoever tried to access the harbor vault was using an administrative master key, Clara calculated rapidly. It wasn't a standard break-in. It was an inside job from one of his lieutenants.
Mateo didn't flinch. He stood motionless on the wind-swept balcony, his gray eyes tracking the sweep of the red security lights across the estate grounds.
"Silvano," Mateo said softly. It wasn't a question; it was a cold, absolute realization.
"Sir?" the guard asked.
"Silvano left the table five minutes before the alarm sounded," Mateo said, turning his head slowly toward his lead guard. "He didn't go to the cigar lounge. Search his vehicle before he reaches the gate."
"Right away, Don Mateo!" The guards turned and sprinted down the corridor.
Mateo turned back to Clara. His large hand reached out, grabbing her wrist with a firm, inescapable grip. He didn't drag her, but the sheer force of his presence pulled her along as he marched back inside toward the central wing of the mansion.
"Where are we going?" Clara asked, pitching her voice into a soft, nervous tremble as they hurried down the echoing hallway.
"My private study," Mateo replied, his jaw set in an icy line. "If the harbor vault was targeted, the central server node in my wall safe is the next logical point of attack. Silvano knows he can't leave the grounds while the outer gates are locked."
Clara’s heart slammed against her ribs.
The safe.
If Mateo opened the wall safe himself to verify the node's security, she would get a direct look at the secondary mechanical tumbler sequence—the exact mechanical override she hadn't been able to crack earlier.
They reached the heavy oak doors of the master suite. Mateo shoved the door open, pulling Clara inside before locking the heavy deadbolt behind them. He marched straight into the adjoining study, releasing her wrist as he stepped up to the mahogany desk.
He swept aside a heavy bronze paperweight, pressing his palm flat against the hidden wood seam.
The wall panel popped open, revealing the matte-black face of the safe.
Mateo reached for the digital keypad, his fingers hovering over the keys. Then, suddenly, he stopped.
The room went completely quiet except for the distant, muted wail of the perimeter alarms outside.
Mateo slowly turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto Clara, who was standing three feet away near the edge of the desk.
"You're very calm for a woman whose wedding night was just interrupted by an armed syndicate breach," Mateo said, his voice dangerously soft.
Clara kept her hands clasped tightly in front of her emerald dress, forcing her shoulders to tremble slightly. "I'm terrified, Mateo. I don't know who Silvano is, and I don't know what's happening."
Mateo took a single step toward her, his shadow falling over her completely. He reached out, his long fingers lightly tracing the high collar of her dress, feeling the faint, rapid flutter of her pulse against her neck.
"You're a terrible liar, Clara," Mateo whispered, a faint, dark curve touching his lips. "Your heart is beating fast, but your eyes... your eyes are calculating."
He stepped back, gesturing toward the open safe with a subtle tilt of his head.
"Open it," Mateo ordered softly.
Clara blinked, genuine surprise cracking through her composure. "What?"
"You had your tools against this tumbler three hours ago," Mateo said, stepping behind her so his broad chest brushed the back of her shoulder, his heavy hands coming down to rest on the edge of the desk on either side of her frame. "If Silvano breached the harbor vault, he compromised my digital biometric key. The only way to lock down the central server now is to engage the manual mechanical override inside that safe."
He leaned down, his deep baritone vibrating directly against the shell of her ear.
"Show me how fast those clever fingers really are, wife," Mateo whispered. "Crack my safe for me... or let Silvano take the ledger that killed your mother."
Clara turned her head sharply, her amber eyes widening as her breath caught in her throat.
He knows about my mother.
