Mateo didn't bother turning the handle.
He drove his combat boot directly into the lock mechanism with violent, overwhelming force. The heavy oak doors exploded inward, the brass latch shearing off as the doors slammed against the interior walls like thunder.
Before the guard inside could even clear his holster, Mateo fired two rapid, suppressed rounds from his submachine gun. The guard collapsed onto the Persian rug with a dull thud, his weapon sliding across the polished floorboards.
Julian Valenti scrambled back from his mahogany desk, his face turning pale as paper. His hands fumbled wildly toward the open drawer where his revolver rested.
"Don't," Clara’s voice cut through the room, cold and sharp as broken glass.
Julian froze. His eyes slowly lifted from the desk, moving past the imposing, blood-stained silhouette of Mateo Rossi to lock onto the woman standing beside him.
Clara stepped through the splintered doorway, her suppressed 9mm leveled dead-center at her father's chest. Her emerald silk dress was ruined, dark with seawater and blood, but her posture was regal, her amber eyes burning with a terrifying, absolute clarity.
"C-Clara?" Julian gasped, his raspy voice trembling as he gripped the edge of his desk. "You... you're alive?"
"You sound disappointed, Father," Clara said smoothly, her fingers completely steady on the grip of her pistol. "Did you expect me to be lying in a morgue alongside the memory of my mother?"
Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Clara and Mateo. Mateo stepped into the room with slow, deliberate strides, his tall frame looming over the desk like an executioner. The dark scar across his cheek stood out starkly against his pale, rain-slicked skin.
"Mateo..." Julian stammered, raising his hands in a frantic gesture of peace. "Listen to me! This is a massive misunderstanding! Silvano acted on his own! He rogue-breached the harbor node—"
"Silvano is already dead, Julian," Mateo interrupted, his baritone voice dropping into a register so low and quiet it made the room feel ice-cold. "His own men handed him over ten minutes ago. And before he died, he gave me the private offshore transfer logs from twelve years ago."
Julian’s throat hitched. His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic as his gaze fell upon the waterproof satchel slung across Clara’s shoulder.
"You took the ledger..." Julian whispered, realization crashing over him.
"I took everything," Clara corrected, taking three slow steps forward until the barrel of her weapon was less than four feet from his chest. "I took the transaction records that prove you set up my mother's hit-and-run to clear your gambling debts. I took the authorization files that prove you tried to sell Mateo’s harbor routes. And right now, I'm taking your master key."
"You can't do this!" Julian yelled, his composure completely shattering into desperate rage. "I am your father! I gave you a roof over your head! I raised you!"
"You raised a ghost," Clara said, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You treated me like a shadow in Bianca's house, and then you put me in her wedding dress hoping Mateo’s enemies would put a bullet in my heart."
Mateo reached past Clara, his massive hand closing around Julian’s silk tie. In one effortless, terrifying surge of strength, Mateo yanked the older man over the top of the mahogany desk, slamming him face-first onto the wood.
Julian let out a strangled groan as Mateo pinned his head down, holding him completely motionless.
"You have ten seconds, Julian," Mateo growled into his ear, racking the slide of his sidearm with a sharp, metallic click. "Tell my wife where the humidor key is, or I will let her decide how your story ends."
"In... in the bottom left drawer!" Julian choked out, tears of pain and terror welling in his eyes. "Under the false velvet panel! Take it! Take all of it! Just let me live!"
Clara stepped around the desk without a word. She pulled open the bottom drawer, ripped back the false velvet lining, and pulled out a heavy, platinum master USB drive embossed with the Valenti crest.
This was the master key—the digital seal to every shell company, offshore account, and syndicate route her father owned.
She slid the drive securely into her tactical belt, looking down at the man who had traded her life away without a second thought.
"What about Bianca?" Clara asked softly, her amber eyes cold. "Where is your favorite daughter, Father?"
"She... she was sent to the airport two hours ago," Julian whimpered into the wood. "She's flying to Milan... out of reach..."
Clara exchanged a quick, sharp glance with Mateo. A cold smirk touched Mateo’s lips as he pressed his weight harder onto Julian’s shoulder.
"Milan is Rossi territory," Mateo murmured softly. "She won't make it off the tarmac."
