Chapter 3

Mila’s POV The first thing I did was to pull the phone away from my ear and stare into the screen with furrowed eyes. “What does she mean?” I cursed. Asher’s phone is always on and he's always online. “Let me check WhatsApp.” “Please let him be there.” I pleaded, stamping my foot on the floor of the taxi. My heart was playing drums. On w******p, the green light of his profile which always appeared was gone. I tapped on his account, then his profile to see when last he could have come online but his face was gone. Blank white, his face was gone. “Something is definitely wrong.” I said to myself, tapping furiously on the driver. “Please speed up.” I checked my phone time. 11:22 AM. From the distance here, it will be until 11:50 AM before I arrive. “I want to reach there by 11:40 AM latest.” I panted. “Being fast can save someone's life. He's not picking, not available, he could be in danger.” I lamented, almost struck with tears in my eyes. I wondered what could have happened to him and our baby. It was a crime to speed over here in the pack except in cases of emergencies like this, I had a perfect excuse. It wasn't my first time leaving him to step out, but this looked strange. We always chatted even while out. He's personally told me to communicate regularly with him, in case I needed help. This, I did. In no time, I reached her apartment. The cold, gloomy and silent exterior greeted me. The door was locked when it's always opened each time Asher or I are at home. Panix cruised my chest. The driver watched, I hadn't even uploaded my goods from his car. He had to help while staring at me with eyes full of pity. I tried my best not to cry. What if Asher had been shot or something? “No, don't be pessimistic.” I heard a small voice whisper in my head but it wasn't my wolf, she was silent, panicked, wondering why her promised mate wasn't picking her mindlinks. “Maybe he has just gone for a walk or something and his phone may have been snatched. He's wealthy, and will get another one.” The assurances lined up. “You know how rogues love to steal from our foreigners?” It was true but I wasn't totally convinced. I paused to take a quick breath. Maybe it's this, maybe it's not. I still wanted to find out. My heart was beating to exploding. I glared around the residence for the sight of blood, the very last thing I wanted to think of. But none. The grass was as clear as ever. In case they might have sprayed something over it, I pushed my wolf's senses deeper to search. There was no fading foul smell. “Check inside.” Another small voice came up. “No, my Asher and our baby can never be attacked.” I cried. Meanwhile the driver was still pulling things out. His shocking look didn't matter that much. I walked to the entrance, pushed the door open, expecting to see what my head was forming only to drop to my knees. All of his portraits on the wall were gone. I rushed in, through the living room to our private room, the dressing room linking with our bedroom. None of his clothes and shoes were in sight. I froze, hands on my waist. I wondered if this was for real before rubbing my fingers over my eyes to check out if it's real or I'm dreaming. It was real. I ran across the rooms back to the living room. My eyes caught up with a tiny piece of paper which I hadn't noticed before on the table. “Goodbye love.” “Your baby is safe.” “Until we meet again.” His name rested at the end of the three lines later. Only then did it hit harder, I slumped to the floor with a loud thud. I realized I'd not only lost the man I loved or rather the one I thought loved me so much but my precious baby to a big-time scam, the first word that came to my mind. The tears I'd tried to suppress before now came rushing in, my chest tightened with such a heartbreaking burn my back crashed to the floor. As I lay on the floor, face up, life fading, the events of the past began to play before me. [FLASHBACK] “I can't let such girls mix with others, honestly.” The Alpha of my pack declared with a shrug during the census which takes place every three months to record the identity of all pack members. I was alone, without a mate, my family wouldn't accept me either. They saw me as unclean. Other girls who escaped alongside me might have had an advantage over me being that they had supportive families. Others were lucky enough to meet their mates right after escaping but merely because I did escape with a baby in my arms who was three months, my chances to survive were low. I'd returned home after three years of being held captive at the underground baby factory to meet with hostile parents. My siblings weren't any different. When fire broke out, the men there working for my boss tried transferring to another apartment, where some of us escaped. The news spread all through the pack and we rather than being seen as girls needing help were seen as ill luck. “We are disappointed in you,” mom said. “Because we are poor and have no food, you decided to sell yourself off to the breeder ring for food and money?” “Urgh?” She slashed a slap across my cheek. My baby was crying, that didn't make her pity me any less. “We used our hard earned money to raise you but you turned out to be our worst regret. You left us to go chase a man and s****l pleasure, now you're tired, you return with lies and a baby.” “Who do you think will take care of you and your baby? Urgh?” Dad growled, pointing his fist at me. I stood there shaking, trying to form words to explain to them that I didn't run away but was dragged into a car on my way returning back from classes in the evening but they weren't ready to listen. “Look at Mia and Jerry now,” dad pointed to my younger siblings. “They were your juniors in high school but now freshmen in college.” “And look at you, filthy b***h with a baby… “ Mom chuckled. “You thought when you bring back a baby we will accept you?” She smirked, clapping her hands in disgust. I looked at my siblings, they turned their faces away. I'd expected they would at least beg my parents to take responsibility for me. Even when the Alpha had given the order for us to be cast out to the outskirts of the pack, those whose family offered to take them in and rehabilitate escaped the decree. Even though we were no longer together, I got news from my girls at the breeders ring, so far it seemed I was the most unlucky. While I stood there, thinking of what to do, mom went in, packed out the clothes I had left from three years ago, threw them out, then pushed me furiously. “Get out of here, we never want to see you again.” Dad stood up, walked towards his room and shut the door. Whenever he did this, it was final. It means it's been decided. The pack had cast me out, my family as well. Now I had no choice than to leave the heart of New Haven Pack for the outskirts, the only place I could live without being maligned but life over there isn't as easy as it seems. The outskirts are filled with all kinds of people, rogues, outcasts, exiled and for the fact we have rogues made it so dangerous. Grabbing my baby tight, I picked my bag. I had only a little money to take me for a few days, which I'd managed to save from the meagre salary given to us at the ring.
