Ch. 16Dixie was becoming unsettled and very agitated. She was alone in the safe house, and had been for the better part of the day. Sid Connor had told her to stay put until further instruction. Doing that was easier said than done — the suspense stretched the minutes into hours. Waiting had been nerve wracking enough, having no news of how Marty and the rest of the gallant band were faring. But she was being bombarded by strange calls on Scott’s mobile phone. Not so much pestered, as in the sense of abusive or obscene suggestions or the nonsense of a heavy-breather; it was the opposite.
