26 Terminus, 24 December 1871 A clap of thunder followed by a whoosh of rain against the side of the building woke Henry the next morning from the hour’s doze he’d allowed himself. The wind whipped around the quarters, and a damp cold seeped through the cracks in the thin walls. When he turned to look out of the window, his leg throbbed its objection to the morning’s sudden cold turn to the weather and to the amount of standing he’d done the night before.
