28 It was a flicker of light that made Malik look up, a strange blip just outside the window. Like the others in his small group, he was hiding in the second-floor restaurant of his hotel. He had been trapped here ever since the aliens came – which, admittedly, was less than a day – but he was already starting to worry about the food supply. Coming here had seemed like a good idea, but when Malik and his brother Amir had checked the kitchen, they had discovered that someone had already taken much of the food. Now, with thirty scared people in this dim, chilly room, they would have to decide what to do when they ran out of supplies.
