CHAPTER 3

Her pulse quickened again, but this time, it wasn’t because of Damien’s unnerving presence. It was the adrenaline of the chase, the promise of finally getting closer to the truth. The ballroom’s grandeur began to fade from her focus as her mind shifted into full investigative mode. She slipped through the crowd with practiced ease, her movements graceful but purposeful, blending into the sea of glittering gowns and expensive suits. The library was located just down the hall from the main ballroom, one of the many private rooms reserved for VIPs who needed a moment away from the noise. It was secluded, quiet, and most importantly, off-limits to the general guests, which made it the perfect meeting spot. As she reached the corridor that led to the library, she paused for a moment, glancing over her shoulder. The nagging feeling that someone was watching her hadn’t disappeared since Damien’s parting words. She told herself it was just paranoia, but her instincts had never failed her before. She quickened her pace, her heels clicking softly against the polished marble floors, the distant hum of the gala growing fainter with every step. When she finally reached the grand double doors of the library, Serena hesitated for just a second. The tension in her body hadn’t eased. She knew this meeting was risky, but she was too close to the truth now to turn back. She pushed the doors open and slipped inside. The library was a stunning contrast to the lively extravagance of the ballroom. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, filled with volumes that likely hadn’t been touched in decades. The soft glow of antique lamps cast long shadows across the plush furniture and the ornate fireplace that dominated one side of the room. It was quiet, serene, but something about the stillness made her heart pound even harder. Her eyes scanned the room, searching for her contact, but it appeared empty. Serena stepped further inside, her senses alert. The faint scent of old leather and dust filled the air, and for a moment, the quiet seemed oppressive. She was just about to check her phone again when a voice broke the silence. “You’re early.” Serena spun around, her heart jumping into her throat. The man who stepped out from behind one of the bookshelves was tall, thin, and looked nervous, his eyes darting around the room as though he expected to be caught at any moment. It was him—her contact, the one who had promised her information that could unravel Damien Blackwood’s empire. She exhaled, her body tensing but trying to remain calm. The man standing before her was jittery, his hands trembling as he wiped them against his jacket. He didn’t look like the type to be mixed up with someone as powerful as Damien Blackwood, but she had learned not to trust appearances. Serena approached him slowly, maintaining her professional demeanor, though her pulse quickened with anticipation. “You shouldn’t have contacted me here,” he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. “This place… Blackwood… he sees everything.” “I didn’t have a choice,” Serena replied, her tone steady but firm. “You said you had something for me—something important. If you’re serious about bringing him down, this is your chance.” The man glanced nervously toward the door, then back at her, his eyes filled with fear. He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “You don’t understand. Damien Blackwood… he’s not like other men. He’s… something else. You’ve heard the rumors, right?” Serena frowned, sensing the shift in his tone. “What rumors?” The man hesitated, as if weighing whether or not he could trust her. “About how people disappear around him. How he’s involved in things that no one can explain. They say he controls more than just his business empire. They say he’s… a monster.” Serena stiffened. She had heard whispers of such things, the kind of fantastical rumors that often circled powerful men. But she had always dismissed them as just that—rumors. Now, hearing it from her contact, the fear in his voice made her uneasy. Was this man delusional? Or was there something more to Damien Blackwood than even she had imagined? “I don’t deal in fairy tales,” Serena said, her voice sharp. “If you’ve got proof, I need to see it. Otherwise, this is a waste of my time.” The man’s eyes darted around the room again, and he reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small flash drive. “This… this is all I could get. Documents, files… encrypted communications. It’s not much, but it’s enough to start unraveling his empire. But be careful. Once you start digging, there’s no going back.” Serena took the drive, her fingers closing around it tightly. This was it. The evidence she had been chasing for months. She glanced up at the man, her green eyes narrowing. “Why are you doing this? What’s in it for you?” He shook his head, his expression one of resignation. “I used to work for him. Thought I could handle it—handle him. But he’s not… human. Not in the way you think. I’ve seen things—things that made me wish I’d never gotten involved. This is my only way out.” Before Serena could press him further, the doors to the library creaked open. Her heart skipped a beat, and both she and the man froze. For a split second, the world seemed to stop. Serena instinctively hid the flash drive in her clutch, her body going rigid as footsteps echoed through the room. And then, from the shadows, Damien Blackwood stepped inside. His tall frame seemed to fill the entire doorway, his blue eyes locking onto Serena the moment he saw her. The man beside her visibly flinched, his entire body trembling as if Damien’s mere presence was enough to undo him. The air in the room thickened, tension crackling like a live wire. Damien’s gaze shifted briefly to the man, his expression unreadable, though there was a glint of something darker in his eyes. Then, with slow, deliberate steps, he approached them, his presence overwhelming the space. “Am I interrupting something?” Serena forced herself to remain calm, though her heart pounded in her chest. She couldn’t let him know she was rattled. Not now. Not when she was holding the key to unraveling his empire in her hands. “Just having a conversation,” she said, her voice cool, though inside she was anything but. Damien’s eyes lingered on her for a moment, then shifted to the man beside her, who was visibly shaking. He didn’t even have to speak—his mere presence was enough to send a chill through the room. Serena could see it now, the way people talked about him—the way they feared him. There was something different about Damien Blackwood, something that went beyond wealth and power. She had felt it earlier, the predatory edge beneath his polished exterior, and now it was impossible to ignore. The man who had given her the drive swallowed hard, his face pale. “I—I was just leaving.” Damien didn’t move, didn’t say a word. But his eyes followed the man as he all but fled from the room, his footsteps quickening as he disappeared through the door, leaving Serena alone with Damien. The silence that followed was suffocating. Serena could feel the weight of his gaze on her, could hear the steady, controlled rhythm of his breathing as he slowly closed the distance between them. “I’ve been keeping an eye on you, Ms. Hayes,” Damien said, his voice low, almost a purr. “You’re a very curious woman.” Serena’s heart thudded in her chest, but she forced herself to meet his gaze, refusing to back down. “I’m a journalist. It’s my job to be curious.” “Is that so?” Damien’s lips curled into a smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I find it interesting that your curiosity seems to focus on me.” Serena’s breath hitched slightly, but she stood her ground. “You’re a powerful man, Mr. Blackwood. People want to know more about you.” Damien took another step closer, his eyes searching hers, as if he was reading every thought that crossed her mind. “Careful, Ms. Hayes. Sometimes curiosity gets people into trouble.” Serena swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the clutch where she had hidden the flash drive. She had to get out of here, to regroup, to figure out her next move. But Damien was too close now, and she could feel the pull of his presence—the strange, magnetic force that made it impossible to look away. “Are you threatening me, Mr. Blackwood?” she asked, her voice steady, though she could feel the tension coiling tighter with every second. Damien’s smile widened, but his eyes remained cold. “Not at all. I’m just offering a friendly reminder.” He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. “There are things in this world you don’t understand, Serena. Things better left alone.” For a moment, Serena couldn’t breathe. His words sent a chill down her spine, but there was something else beneath them—something that made her pulse quicken in a way she didn’t fully understand. Then, just as suddenly, Damien stepped back, giving her space again. “Enjoy the rest of your evening,” he said, his voice returning to its usual smooth cadence. “I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of each other.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Serena standing in the library, her heart racing and her mind spinning. She exhaled a shaky breath, clutching the flash drive tightly in her hand. Damien Blackwood had secrets—dark, dangerous secrets. And whatever they were, she was now more determined than ever to uncover them. But as she watched him disappear through the door, one thought lingered in the back of her mind. What if he was right?
