The Spy Kodian sat at his desk, fingers drumming against the dark wood as he studied the man across from him. Mr. Zalls looked ordinary—average height, thinning hair, the unremarkable face of a man who could slip into any crowd without being noticed. But under that bland exterior was the spy who had seen the Golden Wolf, the creature Kodian had hunted for a thousand years. “So,” Kodian said, his voice low, almost bored. “You claim to have seen her.” “Yes, Sire.” Mr. Zalls straightened in his chair, his voice trembling just enough to betray nerves. “She turned eighteen a week ago. I saw her first shift myself. She was golden—glowing—radiating power unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” Kodian leaned back, stroking his beard as if weighing the words. His eyes glittered with a dangerous light.
