The woman's screaming always came first. It would cut through the darkness like a blade. And I would always awaken with a sharp breath, my chest heaving as sweat soaked the back of my shirt. Tonight was no different from the rest. For a few seconds, I didn't know where I was. The dream still clung to me, the blood, the rain, the crying baby.
