Chapter 2: The Stranger In Town

309 Words
Echo's eyes locked onto Asher's, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. She felt an inexplicable connection to him, as if they shared a secret that no one else knew. Asher's gaze held hers, his piercing blue eyes seeming to bore into her soul. Echo's heart skipped a beat as he smiled, his lips curling up into a charming smile. "Echo, we need to focus," Chrono's voice whispered in her ear, breaking the spell. Echo blinked, her eyes dropping away from Asher's. She took a deep breath, reminding herself of her mission. "Right, sorry," Echo muttered, her eyes scanning the crowd once more. The suspicious figure she had spotted earlier was now nowhere to be seen. Echo's instincts told her that she had to find him before he caused any more damage to the timeline. "Asher Blackwood," Echo repeated, her mind racing with questions. Who was he, and what was he doing here? Chrono's voice whispered in her ear, "Echo, I'm running a background check on Asher. But so far, I'm not getting any hits." Echo's eyes narrowed. That was impossible. Everyone had a digital footprint, no matter how small. Asher's eyes seemed to bore into hers, as if he knew she was trying to uncover his secrets. Suddenly, a commotion broke out at the edge of the crowd. The suspicious figure Echo had spotted earlier was now running through the streets, pursued by a group of angry townspeople. "Echo, it looks like our rogue time traveler is making a move," Chrono said, her voice urgent. Echo's instincts kicked in. She took off after the figure, her feet pounding the dusty streets of Willow Creek. As she ran, Echo couldn't shake the feeling that Asher was watching her, his eyes following her every move. She glanced back over her shoulder, but he was nowhere to be seen.
