At the door, he had encountered the same close-cropped girl with the crutches, she having finished. She had had recognized him and asked about his job, and looked so empathic that he almost blurted the truth to her. The diner had a cool Mom and Pops atmosphere, and the couple owning the place treated Mel as a daughter. He wondered if poor Eliza would not be faring better here.
