16 - Relieving a Burden
Josh Tallgate caught the defiant expression on the younger man’s face. Of all the times to be misinterpreted! he thought. He rose his palms in a placating gesture.
“No, man, it’s all legit!” he blurted, backpedaling.
Liar, liar, liar!
Josh shivered. Of course, the flying rats were everywhere. He shot lasers at the white bird who had made a graceful pass over them, noting how the sky was turning into a deeper shade of blue, before returning to the matter at hand.
“Your sister told me where to find you,” he added, in a meek voice.
The blue gaze lightened up, all wariness erased.
“You talked to Mel?”
Surging sheet of water lapped their pant legs. The tide was rising. Soon, the whole sandy bar would be submerged.
