The bears stopped their advance.
What are they waiting for?
Bea could feel the confusion ripple from the wolves.
Sunset
She responded, sending her thoughts to the warriors.
They howled in response and bared their teeth.
In the middle of winter, the sunset quickly, and the darkness crept up. They heard the cackles from the vampires as they gleefully stepped forward from the protection of the trees.
There were more of them this time; bears, warlocks, and vampires.
Still recovering from her injury, Bea moved slower than she would’ve liked and managed to catch a few scratches causing her to howl and buckle to the ground. She could’ve sworn she saw the bear smile as it lunged towards her.
A shadow moved and smashed into the side of the bear, bringing it down with a growl.
Mine, she heard in her head, as she watched Alexander bury his teeth in the bear's throat, thrashing his head wildly. He lifted his head then, his snout wet and dripping with the bear's blood. His blue eyes caught hers and he snarled.
It was as if time had slowed and the world faded away as the Lycan approached her. He nuzzled Bea’s prone wolf, pushing her to her feet and steadying her as he stumbled.
Mine, she heard again.
A loud roar broke the moment and they turned. Bennett, in wolf form, was racing towards their father as he loaded the shotgun. As if in slow motion a purple shimmer appeared behind Benjamin. The vampire smiled when he caught Bea’s voice and raised a claw. In one swift motion, it brought its hand down and slashed Benjamin’s neck. With the job done, it grinned again and shimmered away.
Bennett reached Benjamin as he clutched his neck and collapsed to his knees. Blood flowed from his neck, staining his shirt, as he clutched Bennett’s fur. Bennett whimpered and nuzzled his father.
Bea sprinted towards Benjamin’s body, shifting back into her human form as she threw herself on Benjamin’s outstretched hand. He gurgled softly and smiled at his children before his eyes dulled.
Once the Alpha was dispatched all the vampires shimmered away. The warlocks cackled and faded into the night, the bears roared and retreated into the forest once more.
Bennett and Bea had stayed on the ground, clutching their father. Andrea had collapsed at the sight of her family, sobbing hysterically as the loss of her mate wrecked her body.
The wolves howled into the night, mourning their fallen Alpha.
---
The sun had barely broken the horizon when the black Range Rovers pulled up in the front of the packhouse. Matthias loaded the cars silently, communicating with his Lycan guards through the mind link.
Soft sobs could be heard coming from the porch. Gabby clutched onto Bea tightly as she sobbed into her hair. “Please be safe. Please come back.”
Andrea stood just inside the door, her once bright eyes dull, as silent tears flowed down her face.
Bennett and Alexander emerged from the Alpha’s office, speaking in a low voice. They shook hands and Bennett went to comfort his mate, enveloping both Gabby and Bea in a tight embrace.
“You’ll be a great Alpha, Bennett, and Gabby, you’re going to be a brilliant Luna,” Bea whispered. With a sigh, she broke the embrace and looked around. The packhouse, her family, her best friend. Everything she knew and loved.
“Beatrice, we must go.”
She didn’t turn towards the voice, just nodded absentmindedly.
“Take care of each other.” She whispered and forced a smile on her face. There were no tears today, she had to be strong.
Alexander offered Bea his hand, but she glared at him and looked at his hand with disgust. She moved to the other side of the car and slid onto the seat.
As the car pulled away from the packhouse, she watched silently as members of the pack ran alongside the car under the cover of the trees, howling their goodbyes.
---
They arrived at Dark Moon in the early hours of the morning.
Omegas rushed towards the entourage to unload the car. They bowed their heads respectfully to their Alpha and Beta, whispering “Luna” lowly as Matthias escorted Bea out of the vehicle.
Matthias had been the only friendly face during the journey. He had spoken to her softly. He had held her as her silent tears flowed down her cheeks. He had stroked the small of her back as those tears became violent sobs.
And Alexander growled. He snarled at Matthias, but he had kept his distance away from her. Even now, he barely acknowledged her. “Take your Luna to her room” he grumbled to the omegas and stalked into the house.
“Alexander Knight what have you done to her.” A stern voice rang out.
Bea raised her eyebrows as she saw Alexander stop in his tracks in front of an angry lady with grey hair. She poked at his chest and glared at him, dragging him by his arm back towards Bea. She smiled warmly at her and pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Welcome to Dark Moon sweetheart, don’t let my grandson scare you.”
Bea laughed softly and sank into the older lady.
“Now, into your room, get some rest. You’ve traveled a long way.” She turned towards Alexander. “You get over here and take your mate to her room. And be nice to her.”
Alexander grimaced and sighed, defeated. “Yes, grandma.”
Bea took the hand he offered this time and allowed him to tuck her arm under his.
Members of the pack had started arriving at the house for breakfast and they stopped and bowed as they approached, whispering “Alpha, Luna” respectfully. She managed a small smile while Alexander just ignored them and lead her to the elevator.
The elevator shaft was flanked by two grand staircases and was encased in glass. She watched absentmindedly as it rose to the fifth floor.
The elevator darkened and it dinged softly, opening the doors on the opposite side. She allowed him to lead her through the living area and down a hallway and into a brightly lit room. A large bed sat to one end of the room. The table on the other end held a vase of beautiful roses.
Bea slipped her hand out of Alexander's and walked towards the large window which covered the opposite side of the wall. She stroked the sheer curtains and looked out at the field of green and the large blue pool below.
“My room is next door, ring the bell if you need anything…” Alexander whispered.
She barely heard him, but she nodded, still staring out the window. She felt him approach her and place a hand on her waist. She felt his hand tighten as he lowered his face into her neck, his canines nipping into her skin gently. Against everything, she melted into his touch and her eyes fluttered shut. And as suddenly as he was there, he was gone. The door clicked shut behind her.
Bea crumpled onto the floor then, finally allowing all the emotions for the last few days to take her body. She hugged her knees to her body as she finally grieved for her father and for her pack. Her sobs wrecked through her body and she shook violently. She cried then, she cried until there were no more tears left. The exhaustion finally took hold and she slept.
Strong arms encased her, lifting her gently and placing her into the bed. He reached out and smooth her hair away from her face, wiping at the smudges under her eyes.
---
Bea woke up in a strange room, a strange bed.
A moment of panic passed her eyes before the memories flashed through her mind. She sighed and pushed herself out of bed, padding towards the bathroom. It was day again and she wondered how long she had slept.
Pull yourself together Bea, her wolf whispered in her head.
She was right. She’s stronger than this. Get yourself together.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror and grimaced at the dark shadows under her eyes and the tangled nest on the top of her head. Her bags had been placed just by the bathroom and she reached for them and pulled out a change of clothes. She was still wearing the clothes she had traveled in. Tights, tank top, running shoes. She needed a run.
The elevator dinged and Bea stepped into the foyer. It was empty this time, the grandfather clock in the corner chimed that it was past 1030. She passed the large dining area and the kitchen, smiling softly at Matthias who was sitting at the table and drinking a coffee.
Bea stepped on the veranda and placed her earbuds in, music flooded her ears. She smiled, taking a deep breath of fresh air, and took off towards the trees. Her legs pumped underneath her as she built up the pace. The trees passed her in a blur.
From the corner of her eye, a black shape ran alongside her and jumped, landing in her path, and she skidded to a stop. The large black wolf stared at her, baring his teeth and growling loudly. It stalked towards her and transformed into a large man.
Alexander stalked closer to her until her nose bumped his naked chest.
“Beatrice.”
“Alexander.” She replied through gritted teeth, willing her eyes not to roam.
“What are you doing.”
She looked at his face and raised an eyebrow. “I’m running, Alexander. Never seen a girl run before?”
His lips twitched before it took on a scowl.
“It’s not safe. You’re still not strong enough.”
“Is the big bad Alpha telling me that he can’t even protect his pack on his land?” she taunted.
There was a rumble from his chest and his hand shot out and gripped her neck. He raised her so he could look into her eyes then. Black was beginning to encroach on that brilliant blue.
“Say that again.”
Bea struggled to breathe but let her hands stay by her sides. She kept her eyes on his and spat out “Can’t… protect… his… pack.”
He growled again and threw her over his shoulder, holding her tightly across her thighs.
“PUT ME DOWN.”
She felt him laugh. They were heading back to the packhouse.
“PUT ME DOWN RIGHT NOW.” She turned against him and tumbled onto the grass below.
“What do you think you’re doing? You can’t control me. I can run if I want to.” Bea breathed hard as she felt her anger course through her body. She could feel her wolf strain in her mind and gnash her teeth.
Alexander brought his body over her, placing his hands on either side of her head, and smirked.
“That's where you’re wrong, little wolf. You’re on my land. You live under my rules.”
Bea ducked and rolled under his arms and shot back up to her feet. Alexander reached out and gripped her shoulders. “And you’re mine.”
She laughed then “Am I really? You don’t want me.”
Bea shook her shoulder out of his grip and turned to walk away but her knees buckled, and her vision swam. Alexander grabbed her around the waist and lifted her into his arms, cradling her gently. He sighed. “Beatrice, please. You haven’t eaten in 3 days and you’re still not fully recovered from your injuries.”
She fought against him weakly and admitted defeat, allowing him to carry her back to the dining room. She melted into his arms. We fit in here perfectly as we should, her wolf whispered.
Alexander placed her gently into a chair and brought her a plate of food that an Omega had left for her. She stared at it and bile rose in the back of her throat. “I don’t want this.”
“Eat.”
“No.”
“Beatrice, eat” his voice rose.
“No.”
“EAT” he roared.
“NO, LET ME DIE” she screamed back.
Alexander swept his arm across the table and the plate smashed into the wall. He pulled her from the chair and pushed her into the wall, his hands around her neck again.
“My father is dead. My mother is probably not far off, she’s not strong enough to withstand the pain of the loss of her mate. My warriors are dead.”
His gaze softened as he watched this strong warrior weep angrily.
“Go on, kill me. Come on Alpha, do it.”
“Beatrice…”
“Alex! More attacks!” Jasper yelled, rushing into the dining room.
