“Daddy, daddy wook!” a little dark-haired boy rushed into Alexander’s study with a model airplane in his hand. He couldn’t have been more than 2 or 3 and when you look at him, you would not be able to deny who his father was.
“Hmm?” Alexander looked up from the papers at his desk and he smiled, reaching forward to pull the boy into his lap.
“What’s this Thaddeus?”
“Awpwane!” the boy responded gleefully, swinging his arm around to make the plane fly.
A flustered omega rushed into the room and visibly paled when she saw the boy in Alexander’s lap. “Al – Alpha, apologies, Thaddeus just ran.”
He waved the omega away, attention solely on the pup in his lap.
“Come on, let’s find your mother.”
He lifted the boy up and settled him comfortably on his hip. The boy was still making wooshing noises and swinging the plane around. He placed a kiss on Thaddeus’ forehead as they stepped into the office next door.
“Mama!”
At the desk, a beautiful brunette was sitting behind it with her pencil in her mouth. She was chewing on the end with great vigour and was muttering angrily under her breath as she hunched over a book. Her blue eyes flicked up and her frustration dissipated, leaving only love and joy.
“My boys!”
They’d approached and Alexander settled the boy into her arms. He placed a tender kiss on her lips and stood behind her chair. The boy was babbling about airplanes again and she was listening so intently to him as if there was nothing more important in the world.
Alexander smiled. This was perfect.
It was then that he noticed the room begin to tremor and books began to fall off the shelves. He looked around in a panic and looked down at the chair to pull the woman and the boy to safety. The chair was empty.
“OLIVIA! THADDEUS!” he screamed and ran through the drawing-room.
“ALEXANDER!” a voice shouted from the drawing-room.
Another strong tremor brought him to his knees.
“OLIVIA!” he screamed again.
“ALEXANDER!”
The tremors grew and the walls begin to crack. Unable to get to his feet, Alexander surrendered and placed his face in his hands.
---
“ALEXANDER WAKE UP!”
“5 more minutes!” he groaned, tugging tightly at the warm body in his arms.
“Alexander!” somebody slapped him, and his eyes shot open. Matty and Jasper were next to him, both shaking his shoulders and pulling at his arm. A shot of pain moved through his chest and he gasped, suddenly realising where he was.
“Beatrice!” He looked down at her still body, relieved that she was still breathing. Horror overtook him as he raked his eyes over the black and green holes that littered her side.
“Come on Alexander, let’s go!” Matty yelled again.
Jasper had reached out to take Beatrice from his arms but when Alexander noticed she was naked, he had growled and pulled her away from Jasper. With great difficulty, he managed to get to his feet with Bea still in his arms.
He looked around and could smell blood in the air. In the distance, a group of his warriors had surrounded a rogue and a hunter, and they were growling menacingly. Bodies of both rogues and hunters surrounded them.
“Get somebody to clean this up.” He growled and began to set off towards the house.
“Yes Alpha.” Jasper jogged towards the warriors and Matty kept in step with Alexander.
“What happened Matthias.”
“You were shot, Alpha, in the chest. The shells were either poisoned or cursed but it was hurting you the same way the bears had hurt Beatrice. When she saw you go down, she charged towards the hunter who shot you. By the time we managed to get to you she was on you but then collapsed not long after. Your wound somehow sealed itself shut and we managed to get all the silver shrapnel out of the wound.”
Alexander stopped in his tracks. He adjusted Bea and reached for his collarbone, his breath hitching as his fingers grazed over the raised skin just at the base of his throat. He felt his wolf howl in his head in happiness.
She marked us, Alexander!
Why?
To save your life! Her wolf came to us and gave us their strength to heal from the poison. Now we must do the same for her!
He shook his head and looked down at her body. The green ooze on her side was spreading, reaching towards the other wounds to knit together and form one large one. Her right wrist was still bleeding, and she had bruises all over her body. He began to jog.
“Matthias, check on our guests and send Dr Elliot up to my room when he’s done with the warriors.”
“Yes Alpha.”
---
Alexander paced the bedroom impatiently as Dr Elliot looked over Bea, still perplexed over the injury. He shook his head, confused – “The poison seems to be eating away at flesh faster than the flesh can heal itself. Because she’s not a Lycan, it spread much faster than yours.”
He snarled and walked towards the bed, grabbing the doctor by his shirt and pulling him away from the bed. Surely there was something that could be done. He had held her tightly the whole way here, sure that as the last time, his proximity to her would help the wounds knit together faster. It had not. Now the little dots of green and black had combined, leaving 3 large wounds on her side that had steadily begun to grow in size. Even her wrist was not healing as fast as it should. There was something in the poison that was blocking her wolf’s ability to heal the body.
Alex, mark her. I can save her wolf.
No, she would not like me marking her without her permission!
She’s not going to wake up for you to be able to ask her, Alex. Do it or she’ll die! I don’t want our mate to die.
That was enough to convince Alexander. He swiftly pulled her body into his lap and gazed lovingly at her face. Fine, do it.
Instantly his eyes darkened, and his wolf took control. He pulled Bea close to his body as his canines elongated and without hesitation, plunged them above her collarbone on the base of her neck. She whimpered weakly and struggled for a moment before collapsing weakly in his chest.
Colour instantly returned to her cheeks and the gashes on her wrist began to close. The wounds on her shoulder and side glowed angrily but they too began to diminish, slowly pushing out the pieces of silver shrapnel which fell to the floor.
He settled her on the bed and made room for Dr Elliot to check her over quickly.
Thank you, a feminine voice rang out in his head. He just nodded.
---
Bea shot up and off the bed with a wild look in her eyes. s**t, I passed out. f**k they got me. Door!
She took off towards the door and was about to reach it when strong arms grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back.
“NO!” she screamed. She swung her elbow back and heard a satisfying crack. She fell to the floor and ran towards the door again.
“Bea, bea, LULU!”
She turned and a very familiar redhead was wheezing at her clutching his nose. Blood was dripping into his hand and a bruise was forming around his eyes. She looked around him and a sense of familiarity washed over her. Large armchair, fireplace, windows, bed. Oh.
“Jasper oh my god I’m so sorry.” She ran towards him and reached a hand towards his nose, “I’m so so sorry Jasper oh my god.”
Jasper smiled and tugged at his nose. Another crack and he moved towards the bathroom to wash his hands. “All good lu, it’ll heal in a half hour. Get back into bed please.”
Bea gingerly got back into bed and slid under the covers.
“What happened?”
“Lex went down. You got hit a couple of times trying to get to him. You marked him. You went down. He woke up. He marked you. Now we’re here.”
“Oh ok – hang on what!” her hands flew to her neck and found the tell-tale raised skin of the werewolves claim.
“THAT ASSHOLE!” In an instant, she was on her feet again rushing to get out the door.
“Bea,” Jasper called wearily, “please get back into bed.”
“HE MARKED ME WITHOUT CONSENT!”
“He had to Bea, to save you!”
She skidded to a halt and turned towards him slowly “he what?”
“Come here you silly wolf.” Japer grasped her around the shoulders and led her back to the bed. They sat together on the edge and Bea stroked at her mark.
“I can’t believe he did this.”
“Really, and you woke him up to ask his permission before you marked him?”
“Oh.”
Beatrice, he saved us. After you marked him to give his wolf strength, we were drained. I was fading and I couldn’t save you. I needed my mate. This is how you looked.
A vision played in her head. It was her, bruised, naked, and sprinting towards an unconscious Alexander. There was blood flowing from her wrist and she looked like she had been hit by a truck. She was thrown slightly, and a spray of blood and green pus appeared on her side. But there was a determined look on her face when she collapsed in front of Alexander and moved to mark him. Then she collapsed into his arms.
Oh.
“Where is Alexander, anyway, why are you here?” she got up and walked into the bathroom to see if she could find any other injuries. Surprisingly, besides the new scars from her run-in with the shotgun, everything else was just peachy.
“Downstairs with the Alphas having the meeting. He recovered ok and told me to guard you while he dealt with them.”
“Jasper”, she stuck her head out of the bathroom, “you don’t need to guard me. You run the warriors you’ve got enough on your plate especially after last night.”
“Yeah but guarding the Luna is the Gamma’s job too lu, and I’m very grateful that after last night Alex hasn’t skinned me yet. So now, you’re stuck with me.”
She squinted at him and growled. Jasper just grinned back at her.
“Fine, then I guess you’re coming to that meeting with me.”
“No, you need to stay in bed.”
“Did Alexander say you had to keep me in here?”
“No…”
“I guess that’s settled then.”
There was an exasperated growl and Jasper finally said – “Lu, he’s going to kill me. You’re going to be the death of me.”
“I seem to have that effect on people…”
The conference hall was situated just across the hall from the drawing room and was made up of 3 smaller conference rooms with the walls taken down. Sometimes the pack would use this set up for movie nights, other times the smaller rooms would be used for meetings that were too large for their offices to accommodate. For this weekend, long tables had been set up diagonally facing opposite the door on either side of a central aisle. At the very front there was a raised platform with another long table. Large screens had also been installed and currently had a large map projected onto them.
---
There were raised voices as Jasper and Bea approached.
“Pissing contest?”
“Yup.” Jasper nodded.
They stood in the doorway and watched as a few Alphas were standing and yelling at each other. Chairs had been knocked over and there were sheets of paper on the floor.
Bea felt her heart swell when she caught the gaze of a pair of piercing deep blue eyes and remembering what Jasper had said just the afternoon before, she sent out a link.
Honey I’m home.
Why are you out of bed?
I’m fine. And you guys look like you need a referee.
She could feel him rolling his eyes at her as she walked down the central aisle and placed herself in between the two arguing parties. They stopped to stare at her as she approached and winked cheekily at them.
“Sit down, boys.” She said as she passed.
“Who the f – “
They immediately took their seats when they heard a growl coming from the front of the room.
Bea walked towards Alexander, kissed him quickly on the lips, then took a seat at the edge of the platform. Alexander’s eyes followed and she rewarded him with a quick wink and jerked her head at the now silent alphas urging him to continue.
“As I was saying, gentlemen, we haven’t seen a threat this size in 800 years. We have already lost 12 packs. Dark Moon was not invincible and as you know we were attacked last night. There has also been the case of pups being taken from packs. This is the time to set aside your differences and time to come together in defense of our species.”
The crowd begins to murmur nervously amongst them, and Alexander held out a hand.
“They also have with them a weapon or a poison of some sort. We learned last night that human weapons can be imbued with this weapon and cause a large amount of damage.”
A picture of the first warrior pup who died flashed onto the screen.
This time the murmurs were louder.
“So, you let this meeting carry on when there’s a threat like that out there!” an Alpha with a thick French accent shouted out.
“My warriors and my Luna handled the threat just fine. You are all safe and nobody has been harmed.”
His Luna, Bea’s wolf purred.
Hush you
He loves us you know
Well he can tell me himself
His wolf told me
Doesn’t count
His Luna her wolf sang in her head.
She smiled absentmindedly as her wolf faded away into the back of her mind. She shook herself and turned back in just as the Italian Alpha, Alpha Ricci piped up, “I know what the weapon is.”
