CHAPTER FIVE

The door slammed open with a bone-chilling screech, cutting through the silence like a blade. May's heart stopped. Standing in the doorway, a figure emerged from the shadows, his presence dominating the room like a storm breaking the calm of the night. Zane. Her captor. Her obsession. Every muscle in her body tensed, her breath shallow as she took a step back, her pulse a frantic drumbeat in her chest. Zane’s gaze, dark and heavy, swept over her, his eyes flashing with a mixture of fury and something far more dangerous possessiveness. “You didn’t think you could hide from me forever, did you?” His voice, rich with dark promise, slid over her skin like velvet, making her shiver, despite the anger coursing through her veins. Her throat was tight. She wanted to scream, to run, but the words caught in her mouth. Instead, she managed a broken whisper, “I won’t go back with you, Zane. I won’t be your prisoner anymore.” Zane took a slow, deliberate step forward. Each movement was predatory, calculated, like a lion circling its prey. He didn't look at the man standing beside her his focus was entirely on her. "You’ve never been anything but mine, May," he purred, his voice low, a dangerous lullaby that sent an electric jolt of longing through her. “You were always mine. You just don’t know it yet." Her breath caught, her stomach twisting with a mix of defiance and desire. She was terrified. But a part of her, the twisted, broken part of her, craved him. It was suffocating, consuming, and she hated it. She hated him. “No. You don’t own me. Not anymore,” she spat, lifting her chin in defiance. Zane’s eyes darkened, a flicker of something darker something possessive flaring within them. His lips curved into a slow, wicked smile. “You think you have a choice? You’ve never had a choice. Not when it comes to me. You’re mine, whether you admit it or not.” May backed away, but her pulse raced as the man who had helped her the one she thought was her ally moved into her path. His eyes were lowered, avoiding her gaze, as though ashamed. But there was no time to dwell on that. Not when Zane was so close, so dangerously close. “No!” May cried, her voice breaking as she turned to the man for help, desperate. “You... you promised! You said you would protect me!” The man remained silent, his face cold, unreadable. But Zane’s hand gripped May’s arm, pulling her back towards him with the force of a tempest. His touch was searing, his fingers digging into her skin, possessive, demanding. “Don’t waste your breath,” he said to the man, his voice laced with venom. “She’s mine to keep. Forever.” The man stepped back, retreating into the shadows, his face tight with regret, but his silence spoke volumes. The betrayal stung more than she ever could have imagined. He was just like everyone else another piece of the puzzle, another pawn in Zane’s twisted game. “No!” May screamed, thrashing in Zane’s grip. “You don’t get to control me anymore. I won’t be your toy!” But Zane’s eyes, dark and intense, locked onto hers. The world around them seemed to slow, her heartbeat the only sound she could hear. “You were never my toy, May. You’re my obsession,” he whispered, his lips brushing against her ear, sending a wave of shivers down her spine. “And you will come back with me. Whether you like it or not.” May’s legs weakened, her body betraying her. The storm inside her the fury, the fear, the desire crashed against her, and she was drowning in it. “Let me go,” she gasped, her chest rising and falling with each labored breath. Zane’s grip tightened, pulling her closer until she was flush against him, feeling the heat radiating off his body. His lips hovered near hers, and for a moment, she thought he might kiss her take her. But then, he whispered softly, “You think you have the power to walk away from me? You belong to me.” Her heart clenched. Every part of her screamed to run, to escape. But Zane’s presence was magnetic, drawing her in with an unrelenting pull. The man’s face flashed in her mind, the pain of his betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound. But the storm that raged inside her was nothing compared to what Zane could make her feel. And that terrified her. Because, deep down, she didn’t know if she could escape the dark pull of him. Zane’s lips brushed against her cheek, lingering with a heat that made her body ache. “Don’t fight it,” he murmured, his voice low, almost coaxing. “You’ll come to me. Eventually. You’ll see. You always do.” Tears filled her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “I hate you,” she whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them. Zane chuckled darkly, the sound like a sweet poison in her ear. “You think you do. But you’ll learn soon enough. You can’t fight me forever, May.” With that, he dragged her toward the door, her body no longer her own. Her breath caught as she glanced back at the man her last hope, her betrayer. And as the door slammed shut behind her, leaving the man in the darkness, she realized there was no escape from Zane. Not now. Not ever.
