Roman inspected the explosive.
“There may be another entrance.”
Elena struck the door.
“You don’t understand. Luca isn’t here.”
“We know.”
“He took the others.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
A terrible pause followed.
Then Elena whispered, “He left something for you.”
Valentina’s blood turned cold.
“What?”
Movement sounded above them.
Heavy footsteps crossed the floor of the slaughterhouse.
Roman raised one hand.
Every soldier lifted his weapon.
A man began laughing on the other side of the door.
Not Luca.
Matteo.
Valentina spun toward Roman.
Matteo’s voice emerged through a speaker hidden above the explosive.
“You really should have checked the car before leaving the estate.”
Roman’s face hardened.
The radio on Alessio’s vest crackled.
The young soldier stationed beneath the overpass screamed.
Then Matteo spoke through the radio.
“I told you that you needed me.”
Gunfire exploded from both ends of the tunnel.
Roman shoved Valentina against the wall as bullets tore through the darkness.
The explosive beside Elena’s door began to beep.
The beeping accelerated.
Roman covered Valentina’s body with his own as Alessio shouted for everyone to get down.
Then the steel door blew inward.
