Chapter 6. Social Gathering

1299 Words
Sunday, 04 March 2018. Manhattan Upper East Side, New York City. Emilie always starts her morning routine with drinking a hot coffee late, while reading random daily news on her smartphone. The morning vibe always gives her the feeling of pleasure, until the taxis start honking loudly outside her apartment building. Surely, the clamorous sound really disturbs her mood, especially in this very peaceful morning. “Ugh, megacity is always so noisy all the time!” she grumbles. “So annoying!” And then the sound beep-beep comes from her phone. Before she even has to look at the phone screen notification, she already knows who just sent her a text message. And right after she checks it out, her intuition is right on the point.   Illana May: Girl, don’t forget to attend today’s social gathering at Sonia’s place! Love, x.o.x.o.   Emilie chuckles a little when her eyes keep staring at the phone screen. She just loves every time she receives the love, x.o.x.o. message from her friend. It’s like she tries to romanticize this whole friendship situation since she doesn’t have a boyfriend herself. Then quickly she replies.   You: Of course, girl! Sonia’s mom always serves my most favorite pastry! I will surely come! Love, x.o.x.o.   And so hurriedly, she raises from the chair to change her clothes and starts the day soon. *** Emilie park her black sedan car at the edge of the asphalt road. And soon, she walks out from the car with her pair of five centimeters black heels. Some walkers steal a glance at her charming look at the time. She dresses in a knee-length velvet red coat, which is looking suitable with her matte red lipstick, and also with her wavy chestnut dark hair appearance. And of course, she’s already looking like the wealthiest neighbor next door in here. As she walks into the porch, she feels like she arrives a little too early again this time. No one is seen in there. And so, she hurriedly hit the doorbell. Then behind her, she hears the familiar click-click sound of high heels. When she turns to look, it’s Illana that just arrives early like her. “Hey, what’s up?” Emilie shouts. Illana than nods at her while smiling sweetly as usual, and says, “Nice morning. I have my diet coffee. So, it’s totally okay. Thank you for asking.” Emilie chuckles at her random words. It’s just a funny thing. Then they wait for a second until a corpulent woman who’s about forty, opening the door for them. That woman in a blue ocean dress then smiles widely and excitedly at both of them. “Oh, my! Isn’t this Emilie Roze and Illana May?” she shouts without unblinking her eyes. Emilie then returns her smile and says, “Uhm, yeah, Ms. Ash. Good morning. How are you today?” Illana also follows along to say, “Yeah, hello Ms. Ash. Good morning.” This woman is Sonia’s stepmother. Of course, it looks crystal clear that they don’t share any similar physiology. Ms. Ash has Caucasian blood and short white hair that she cuts pixy, while Sonia treasures Eurasian blood and long dark hair that almost looks blackish. Without making them wait for too long, Ms. Ash hurriedly invite them in. As they walk into the cozy living room, then Ms. Ash offers them, “Wants some cookies?” “I’m on my diet actually, but it’s okay,” says Illana almost immediately. As they both sit on the sofa, then Emilie glances at her for a second before chuckling. Illana turns to glance back at her in bewilderment and asks, “What’s so funny?” Emilie shakes her head, and murmurs, “Nothing. It’s just that the thought of you afraid of getting fatter, it’s absolutely reminds me of…” Illana then shouts agitatedly at her, “Ugh, stop right there! I know what you’re about to say. Don’t even think to mention her name!” Meanwhile, Ms. Ash looks at them concurrently as she almost wanting to chuckle along. “Okay, I won’t. But instead, we can still call her the Beefy Girl,” says Emilie as she chuckles. Illana rolls her eyes in annoyance. But then she follows to laugh along with them. “Why are you two still calling her with that stupid nickname?” Ms. Ash asks for a second. Then she starts pushing her breast and ass to show them and says again, “Just look at mine. It’s beefier than hers, right?” Emilie and Illana laughs out loud when Ms. Ash tries joking funnily like that. And Emilie hurriedly shouts, “Okay, Ms. Ash, I want some cookies, if you don’t mind? And do you make pastry today?” Ms. Ash smiles widely and says, “Oh, of course. As for pastry, I’ll serve that for later, yeah?” “Cookies is also good,” Illana says and nods. “Okay then, coming right up, girls!” Ms. Ash shouts. But before Ms. Ash walks away, Emilie shouts again to ask, “Uhm. Ms. Ash, where is Sonia? Has she woken up yet?” “Ah, she already wakes up, dear. She still in her bedroom, I guess,” Ms. Ash answers. And once they see Ms. Ash walks into the kitchen room, then Emilie glances at Illana again. “Are you really on diet?” she asks curiously. “I mean, you already look skinny to me!” Illana chuckles and says, “Yeah, a diet is good to calm my mind these days.” “Is this about…” then she pauses for a second when thinking about it. Illana stares cautiously at her. “Ups, okay, we already promise not to talk about her no more, but still it’s…” Illana then nods and murmurs, “I know it’s going to be hard since we should meet her every time and then, but can we not romanticize the idea of this stupid drama for once?” Emilie half smiles at her. She already feels bad about it. Then suddenly, the front door wide opens. Their eyes quickly glance at the arrival of their Elite friends. They see the presence of Barbara, Jazz, Alec, Jack, and Sheryl. They’re just being so loud and noisy when greeting each other at the door. “Ugh, look at that,” Emilie snaps when her eyes stare hatefully at the presence of Sheryl. Illana also stares annoyingly at her, especially with the way Sheryl keeps hugging Jack’s arm like a baby monkey. And the way she keeps flirting her eyelashes at him, it’s just so damn bad. “Gross. Do you see that?” Emilie whispers. Illana sighs in disbelief when she sees how pathetic Sheryl is. And Emilie adds again, “She needs to behave. Her flirty acting makes me want to puke.” “Me too,” Illana snaps. Since they can’t stand looking at the disgusting view in front of them, and soon Emilie raises from the sofa to shout firmly at her. “Hei, Beefy Girl! Do you bring our finance notebook?” Emilie snaps. Then Sheryl stops giggling along with Jack, then she turns at her surprisingly. “Oh, there you go. The two of you already here!” she greets cheerfully when approaching them in the white comfy sofa. “So, do you bring the book or not?” Emilie snaps cynically again at her. Sheryl chuckles. Then she quickly opens her small bling-bling black bag while still babbling annoyingly, “Yes, of course I do. Never I ever don’t bring this very important book in our social gathering, my dear. I will always remember…” “Ugh, bubblehead,” Illana grumbles. While Emilie chuckles, it seems that Sheryl doesn’t hear her grouching at the time. “Okay, so, there you go,” Sheryl says as she handover the small notebook to her. Emilie than slightly opens the pages to see what’s inside. Then she steals a glance again between Sheryl and Illana. “Okay, so we just need to wait for the others to be ready for the event to start,” Emilie says. Sheryl nods and says, “Yeah, I am so ready!” “Sonia has not come downstairs yet,” Illana reminds them. Emilie then stares up curiously at the staircase and murmurs, “Where is she?” And then right after they mention about her, Sonia just walks downstairs and starts waving cheerfully at everyone in the first floor. “Hi, sorry for making ya’ll late! I have a real business in the bathroom just now.” Then Emilie smiles and says, “There you go, our lovely girl.”
