đChapter Eleven
Ignored Rumors
.
.
.
The rumours started on a Tuesday.
Amara didnât even know exactly when.
One minute everything was normalâlibrary meetings, fieldwork planning, shared notesâand the next minute people were smiling at her differently.
Not kindly.
Knowingly.
She noticed the first sign outside the Faculty building.
Two girls from Political Science were whispering as she walked past. They stopped mid-sentence when they saw her looking.
Then one of them smiled.
Not politely.
Suspiciously.
Amara ignored it.
Coincidence, she told herself.
Until it happened again.
And again.
And again.
By the time she entered the library that afternoon, she already knew something had changed.
âOkay,â Tina said immediately.
Amara froze halfway to the chair opposite her.
âWhat?â
Tina leaned back dramatically.
âSo youâre not going to tell me?â
âTell you what?â
Tina stared at her.
Then she lowered her voice.
âYou and Daniel.â
Amara blinked.
âWhat about me and Daniel?â
Tinaâs expression said everything.
Amara dropped her bag slowly onto the chair.
âThere is no âme and Daniel.ââ
âMhm.â
âTina.â
âMhm.â
Amara sighed.
âWeâre working on a project.â
âYes,â Tina said sweetly. âAnd apparently walking everywhere together. Studying together. Leaving class together. Eating together.â
âThat is because of the project.â
âSure.â
Amara opened her notebook.
âTina.â
âYes?â
âWe are not dating.â
Tina grinned.
âI didnât say you were.â
Amara stared at her.
âYou implied it.â
âI implied nothing,â Tina said innocently.
Before Amara could respond, another voice joined them.
âI implied it.â
Amara didnât need to turn around to recognize that voice.
Ify.
Of course.
She walked toward their table with the calm confidence of someone who already knew she was bringing trouble with her.
âI just came from the department office,â Ify said casually, dropping her bag onto the chair beside them. âYour names are being mentioned together more than the project topic.â
Amara closed her notebook slowly.
âThatâs ridiculous.â
âIs it?â Ify asked lightly.
âYes.â
âIf you say so.â
Tina looked like she was trying not to laugh.
Amara ignored both of them.
âItâs group work,â she repeated.
âIf it was only group work,â Ify said, âpeople wouldnât be talking.â
Amara felt irritation rise in her chest.
âPeople talk about everything.â
âYes,â Ify agreed easily. âBut not like this.â
Before Amara could respond, someone pulled the chair opposite her.
Daniel.
He sat down like nothing unusual was happening.
âDid I miss something?â
âYes,â Tina said immediately. âYour relationship announcement.â
Daniel blinked once.
âMy what?â
âCampus says congratulations,â Tina continued.
Daniel looked confused.
Then he looked at Amara.
Then back at Tina.
âI donât understand.â
Ify laughed softly.
âThatâs because you havenât been paying attention.â
âTo what?â
âTo the fact that the entire department thinks you and Amara are dating.â
Daniel stared at her.
For a moment, he didnât react at all.
Thenâ
unexpectedlyâ
he smiled.
Not embarrassed.
Not defensive.
Just⊠amused.
âThat explains a lot,â he said quietly.
Amara turned toward him immediately.
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt means,â Daniel replied calmly, opening his notebook, âpeople like stories.â
âThat is not a story,â Amara said quickly.
âItâs definitely a story,â Tina corrected.
âItâs not true.â
Daniel looked at her again.
This time his expression was different.
Quieter.
Softer.
âNo,â he said. âIt isnât.â
Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten unexpectedly.
Before she could figure out why, Ify spoke again.
âYou know,â she said thoughtfully, âsometimes rumours start because people notice things before the people involved do.â
Silence settled over the table.
Amara looked down at her notebook.
Then at her pen.
Then anywhere except Daniel.
Because suddenlyâ
for the first time since the rumours startedâ
she wasnât completely sure what people were noticing.
And that uncertainty followed her long after they left the library together later that evening.
Exactly the way everyone expected them to.
