Chapter 10

Lost. This was her condition. She didn't have a place to stay, a family or a friend. And like this wasn't enough her certificates were destroyed. She didn't know it was her fate or the certificates were too old to be in this condition. She had graduated recently but the certificates looked old. Now she couldn't join the University or fulfil her dreams. The park was bubbling with the laughter of kids who didn't seem to listen to their anxious mommas. As she scanned through the crowd, she found a lonely girl sitting on the other side of the play area. There was nobody next to her. Was she lost? Like me? Serra thought. Serra got up and approached the little girl who was sitting on one of the benches. "Hi" Serra smiled. The girl looked at her. Her gaze stirred something deep inside her and her eyes were purple? It was the most beautiful eyes she had ever seen. "What's your name?" Serra asked the little girl. "Sephora." The girl replied. "Sephora? Like the makeup Sephora?" "Huh?" The little girl glared at her. Of course, she was a kid. She wouldn't know much about makeup and stuff. "Are you alone Sephora?" "Yes." "Where are your parents?" "Busy." She looked sad. "It's not safe to be here, in public alone." "Are you with a company?" The girl asked her back. "No," "So isn't it safe for you to be here alone?" She cut in. "That's different, I meant that you need adult supervision. I'm much bigger than you so I," "That doesn't make sense." The girl interrupted once again and then continued, " I don't believe you are very safe because you are big. You seem more lost than me." "You seem to talk a lot for a little child." Serra couldn't help not giving that remark but she hated what she told. "I have always been told that, but it doesn't silence me." This girl was something. She was too bold and amusing. It was like a fresh breath for Serra after all that she was dealing with. The girl got up and said. "Okay. I'm leaving home." "Will you be able to make it alone?" "Believe me, I can find my way back more easily than you." ........................................................................... I was stunned by how much a little mouth can converse. Maybe Sephora was right. I was more lost than her. The girl had a home, knew the way and was more confident than me while I sat here without any of those. Age was only a number as a matter of fact. I took out my phone which Eric had bought me after mine was broken. I looked at the contacts. Eric. It was the only name on the contact list. I looked at the time. The interview was in another 15 minutes. Thank God. Hopefully, I would get selected. After I left the mansion, I had spent an entire day looking for jobs and had spent the night in the park. I finally found a job, a secretary position for some scientist. The pay was good and surprisingly there weren't many requirements for the job. Moreover accommodation was provided. It only stated. A kind and helpful assistant possessing a basic knowledge of reading and writing and a good understanding of commands. Should be available whenever requested and punctuality is a priority. The job didn't require many skills or an educational background which was fortunate for me as I didn't have the certificates anymore. The only request was punctuality and I was always good at it. ........................................................................... Serra reached the building on time. The building was gloomy, dimly lit. She tapped on the door. A maid answered the door. "I'm here for the interview." "Yes, but you're early." "But it is 7:00pm." "No it's 6:57pm. Please wait outside until your given time.' And she slammed the door. Wow, what was that? This guy is pretty serious about timing.Serra thought. She had already thought it was weird to have an interview at night. But she didn't have a choice, she didn't want to spend another night in the park. At exactly seven, the door opened. "Please sit here, Mr Hans will be here shortly" Said an elderly serious looking woman. A man, most probably in his 40's entered the room. "Hello Mrs Serra." He smiled. "Hello sir." "You have been selected for the job." "The interview?" Serra asked. "The interview has already taken place and you were selected out of the three attendees." "Thank you." Serra was shocked but relieved. "Mrs Walter will show your room and help you get started." He continued. "Thank you sir." "You may start tomorrow at 8:00 am, no, let me see, 8:05 am would do." "Sure." He looked at the woman, Mrs Walter, who immediately nodded her head and escorted Serra to the rooms on the other side of the building. "This is your room." She pointed at door No 316 and handed her the keys. "As long as you work here, this room will be yours." Mrs Walter explained. "Thank you. Does Mr Hans pay for the rooms?" "No. This is his building." "Oh okay." "If there is anything let me know, I'm in room No 318." She pointed to her room. Serra nodded her head obediently. "Please be ready by 7:00am tomorrow, so I can explain your duties clearly." "Yes sure." "Have a good rest." "Thank you." ........................................................................... Emma heard something outside her room. It was 1:00pm. Was it Dave? How many times has she told him not to meet her here. Mrs Walter had been furious the last time. Somehow Emma had convinced her not to tell Mr Hans. Emma worked for Mr Hans family even before Mr Hans had moved to the building. It was weird that he would stay in the building where all Mr Hans family's maids, office employees, secretaries and even their drivers, like Dave would stay. Most of their workers and their families stayed in this building. But Mr Hans has always been weird. So it wasn't something unusual. Emma got up and peeked from the keyhole. No, dave, no one. The corridor was empty and silent except for the room on the opposite. The Simpsons family. Their kids were awake almost every night. Emma could hear Mrs Simpson warning the kids that's it's way past bed time. How she wished they have soundproofed the rooms in the building but she knew it was too much to ask after all the facilities they have been provided. Emma went back to her bed. Just as she got into the covers she felt someone beside her. She was too scared to look but slowly turned around and saw the most frightening thing she could ever see. She tried to scream but her voice was caught in her throat. She was terrified when the thing looked at her, it was the ugliest being she ever saw and its eyes ignited her deepest fears.
