🌑 Chapter 19 — The Breaking Point

596 Words
Elena woke to silence. The forest was gone. The mist, the shadows, the crimson light—gone. She lay in her bed, but her skin still burned, her veins still hummed with fire. The mark glowed faintly beneath her collarbone, a reminder of the night she had drunk Lucien’s blood. She sat up, clutching the sheets. Her heart beat too fast, too strong. And when she looked in the mirror, her eyes flickered—not gold, not brown, but glowing faint crimson for the briefest of moments. Her breath caught. I’m changing. Lucien stood outside her house when she emerged, pale, weary, his clothes torn from battle with the shadows. His eyes softened when he saw her, though guilt lingered there too. “How do you feel?” he asked quietly. “Different,” she admitted. “Like my body isn’t mine anymore.” He looked away, his jaw tight. “I should have let the curse take me instead.” “Don’t say that,” she snapped, surprising herself with the sharpness of her voice. “You gave me your blood to save me. Don’t you dare regret it.” His gaze met hers, tortured. “I regret only that it will cost you more than you know.” That night, the bond burned hotter than ever. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt his heartbeat in her chest. His hunger pulsed with hers, each need entwined. And when she dreamed, she didn’t dream of herself. She dreamed of him—his past, his grief, the three women who had come before her. She saw their faces, their screams as the curse claimed them, Lucien’s hands stained with blood. She woke sobbing. Lucien was already there, standing by her window, eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight. “You saw,” he murmured. Elena pressed a hand to her mouth. “All of them. You held them… and you lost them.” His voice broke. “And I’ll lose you, too. That’s what the curse wants. That’s what it always takes.” Her heart ached, but she reached for him, gripping his hands. “Then fight it with me. Don’t push me away.” He closed his eyes, trembling. “If I love you, Elena… it will kill you.” “Then let it,” she whispered fiercely. “Because not loving you is killing me already.” A slow clap echoed through the room. Darius leaned against the window frame, silver eyes glittering. “Beautiful,” he drawled. “But tragic. She’s already slipping, Lucien. Look at her eyes. Your blood is changing her.” “Get out,” Lucien snarled, his fangs bared. Darius only smirked. “Why waste time fighting? The bond is poison. The longer you cling to her, the faster she burns. Give her to me, and at least she won’t die screaming.” Elena’s blood ran cold. “I’ll never choose you.” Darius’s smile turned sharp. “We’ll see.” And then he vanished, leaving only silence and the weight of his words. Lucien pulled her close, burying his face in her hair. His voice was raw, breaking. “The bond is tearing you apart. And tomorrow night… the Crimson Moon reaches its peak. That’s when it decides.” Elena clutched him tighter, her mark burning so hot it hurt. “Then let’s decide first. Together.” Above Ravencourt, the blood moon swelled brighter, its final rise painting the world in fire. And Elena knew: the next night would either seal their love forever… or destroy them both.
