Chapter 9Azrail was buzzing with energy, it prickled and burned, and he grunted with each step he took. For the second time in his life, he’d killed, sucked out the last drop of energy, and it turned his stomach. The guard had only done his job, but when he’d grabbed Dot, he hadn’t hesitated. Dot was formidable in many ways, but they couldn’t risk a fire or an explosion right this moment. At least not an uncontrolled one. “This way.” Yilea ran ahead of them. “I can smell fuel.” Azrail couldn’t make his mouth form words, but he sent out his mental feelers again. “Life ahead.” It wasn’t more than a whisper, but Dot heard him and repeated his words louder to Yilea. She stopped and pressed herself against the gray metal wall. Their heartbeats echoed in the large hangar. Time stood still. F
