UNDERDRESSED

Amy rubbed the back of her palm that had collided with the iron bars under her seat. She frowned and cursed her clumsy nature, but she prayed internally. She did not want to do anything stupid and most especially, she would rather not carry out any clumsy act when she gets to her destination. This was her 30th interview and hopefully, it would not end as bad as the twenty-nine others that she had gone to and failed. She sighed, remembering all her terrible encounters stepping down from the bus at another bus stop. After an hour, she stepped down from another bus, the third bus of the day before her destination. The tall building stood majestically before her, with a big sign at the top; Vee theatre. No, she is not here for a movie role but for a job as a personal assistant. She checked her wristwatch for the last time. “Annnd I'm officially late” she muttered under her breath She was not just late but one hour and thirty minutes late for her interview. With reluctance and little hope of getting the job, she approached the building. After a quick glance over her environment, which was uncomfortably quiet, as though no one were around, she stepped into the theatre. The door made a little creak as she pushed it open. The main area was empty. There was no one in sight. A smile slowly crept out on her lips as she thought no one was there yet. Just before she could complete that thought, she heard an angry voice behind her. “You're late!” the masculine voice said She quickly spun around to meet his intimidating and angry gaze. A nervous smile erupted on her face. His eyes glided from her head to toe, with his frown glued to his face. Amy felt weird under his gaze but still tried to explain herself, “Sir, I-" But he interrupted before she could, “Go to the back. The interview is about to start" he said and without waiting for her to speak, he turned around and left. She pouted, then turned around and walked to the back of the stage. When she got there, she looked around, searching for others. At the far end of her left, an open door stood with a few people within the room. Slowly, she stepped into the room and there were only ladies in there, but she immediately fell out-of-place staring at them. They did not pay her any attention as she came in, as they were busy with other things, mostly fixing up their make-up. But their dress intimidated her. They were dressed exquisitely and were pretty. She was not badly dressed or ugly, but the people before her looked and behaved like celebrities. There was no way they were here for a personal assistant job. Maybe they were here for a role in a movie because if they were here for the job she came for then they were overdressed or was she underdressed? Her eyes went to her body. She had on a red box pleated skirt over a white long - sleeves to the neck shirt that she tucked into the skirt, but at the moment her shirt was not visible. She had on a black jacket over it as on her way here it got stained. Luckily, she had her jacket with her or there would have been an issue. Or so she thought. Her eyes went to the ladies all scattered around the room. She decided to ask one of them if this was where she was supposed to be. Her eyes landed on a pale-looking lady that was seated staring at herself in a hand mirror she held up while fixing her make-up while chewing gum. With a slow moment, she approached her. It took a lot of effort from her, but she had to, or she might put herself in trouble. “Hi” she smiled The pale-looking lady took her eyes off her reflection, then turned to Amy, who gave a nervous smile. The lady's eyes drove from her head to her shoes, which were a bit dusty, then she turned back to her reflection. “This is for the PA position, not for cleaners,” Amy heard the woman say Amy was dumbfounded. Well, she would not blame the lady. When put between all of them in the room, she was out of place and under-dressed. “Move” Amy heard behind her and a push to the side. A fair-looking lady putting on a blue fitted gown was the one who spoke and did not spare a glance at Amy even after pushing her. “You are late Soph” the pale-looking lady spoke “I'm here now. Know that I will win this, Ivy" Sophia spoke. Ivy said nothing and just touched up her make-up. Amy looked around. With the way everyone stared at Sophia, she was not liked by anyone in the room and, weirdly enough, not even Ivy. “The interview begins now" a voice came from the speaker at the side of the ceiling “Sophia Grace, head to the room across the hall" Queen Bee, a name Amy came up with, gets called first. With a sway on her hips and her shoulder that seemed to want to touch the ceiling, she walked towards the room opposite the room they were in. Everyone went back to what they were doing after watching Sophia disappear into the room. After a few minutes and a few other ladies, the speaker sounds, “Amelia Rave”, Amy jolts. She momentarily forgot she was also here for an interview. All the other girls who had come back into the room looked confident even after their interview, and it scared her. Did she even stand a chance of getting the job? Every gaze in the room landed on her as she walked out of the room to the interview room. They all scoffed as she turned the knob and got into the room. She had no chance against them.
