Chapter Six BEATRICE SMILED AT her. “I’m sorry, Heidi—am I in your way? I was deep in thought, I’m afraid.” Heidi was a small woman in her early-thirties with brown hair and large, expressive brown eyes. Beatrice suddenly realized that she must be twenty or more years younger than her husband, Aiden. Heidi gave her an apologetic smile in return, but her eyes were anxious and she looked pale and unwell. She said something in a low voice and Beatrice cupped her ear to indicate that she couldn’t hear her. Heidi said a bit louder now, “No, I’m sorry. I just—well, I was hoping to speak with you.
