Chapter 4

The question hung in the air like a blade over my neck. Will you survive here? Every eye was on me. The guards stood still, watching… waiting. Judging. The tall woman in front of me didn’t blink. Her gaze was sharp, cold, like she had already decided I didn’t belong. This again. Different place… same feeling. Too weak. Not enough. I swallowed slowly. My instinct was to step back… to hide behind Kael… to stay silent like I always did. But something inside me refused. Not anymore. Not after everything. I lifted my chin slightly. “I don’t know,” I said honestly. The answer surprised even me. A few of the guards exchanged glances. They probably expected me to lie… to pretend… to act strong. But I didn’t. “I’ve never been here before,” I continued, my voice steady. “I don’t know your rules. I don’t know your world.” The woman’s eyes narrowed slightly. “But,” I added, taking a small step forward, “I didn’t survive everything I went through just to run away now.” I could feel Kael beside me… still… watching. The woman tilted her head. Studying me. Measuring something. Then she let out a soft, humorless laugh. “Honest,” she said. “That’s new.” Her gaze hardened again. “But honesty doesn’t keep you alive here.” “I didn’t say it would,” I replied quietly. Something flickered in her eyes. I couldn’t tell. Kael finally spoke. “That’s enough, Nyra.” So that was her name. Nyra. She glanced at him briefly. “Is it?” she asked calmly. “Or are you already protecting her?” The tension shifted. I felt it instantly. Kael’s presence darkened slightly. “I don’t protect what cannot stand,” he said. The words hit me. Hard. But I didn’t react. Because I understood what he meant. This place… this world… If I wanted to survive here, I had to stand on my own. Nyra’s lips curved slightly. “Good,” she said. “Then you won’t mind if she proves it.” My heart skipped. “Proves… what?” I asked. Nyra’s eyes returned to me. “Whether you’re worth the title he just gave you.” Mate. The word echoed in my mind. It still felt unreal. Kael didn’t answer immediately. Then he said, “Not tonight.” Nyra’s expression didn’t change. “But soon,” she replied. The meaning behind her words was clear. This wasn’t over. Not even close. The guards slowly stepped back into the shadows. One by one, they disappeared into the darkness… like they were never there. But Nyra stayed. Her eyes lingered on me for a moment longer. Then she leaned slightly closer. Close enough that only I could hear her next words. “This place will break you,” she whispered. A chill ran down my spine. “Unless something stronger inside you wakes up first.” Then she straightened. Turned. And walked away without another word. Silence returned. Like something had already begun. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. My body felt tense… alert… like I had just stepped into a battlefield I didn’t understand. Kael started walking again. “Come,” he said. I followed. But my mind stayed behind… replaying everything that just happened. After a while, I finally spoke. “Who is she?” “Nyra,” Kael said simply. “I figured that part out,” I muttered softly. “I mean… who is she to you?” There was a pause. Then— “My Beta.” My eyes widened slightly. That explained it. The power. The authority. The way everyone listened to her. “She doesn’t like me,” I said quietly. Kael glanced at me briefly. “She doesn’t trust easily.” “That’s not the same thing.” “No,” he agreed. “It isn’t.” We walked a few more steps. Then he added— “She has reasons.” I didn’t ask what they were. Something told me… I would find out on my own. The forest slowly began to change again. The trees grew thinner. The air became clearer. And then… I saw it. My steps slowed. My breath caught. In the distance… A massive structure rose above the land. Stone walls. Tall towers. Dark… powerful… unbreakable. It looked like something out of a story. A kingdom. A real one. “That’s…” I whispered. “My home,” Kael said. My heart pounded. This was real. Everything was real. I wasn’t dreaming. I had actually left my pack… And followed the Lycan King into his world. As we got closer, I noticed movement. More guards. More Lycans. Stronger. Faster. Their eyes followed us as we approached. But this time… They weren’t just looking at Kael. They were looking at me. Whispers started. Low. Quiet. But I could still hear them. “That’s her?” “She’s just a wolf…” “She looks weak…” “Is she really his mate?” The words stung. But not as much as before. Because now… I expected them. And strangely… That made them easier to bear. The gates opened the moment we reached them. No questions. No hesitation. Everyone here knew him. Respected him. Feared him. I stepped inside slowly. And everything changed. The inside of the kingdom was even more overwhelming. Large buildings. Training grounds. Warriors moving with purpose. Everything felt… organized. Powerful. Alive. This wasn’t just a place. It was a force. And I was standing right in the middle of it. We walked through the main path. People stopped. Watched. I felt exposed. Out of place. But I kept walking. I didn’t want to show weakness. Not here. Not again. Finally, we reached a large building at the center. Bigger than all the others. Stronger. More guarded. “This is where you’ll stay,” Kael said. I hesitated. “With you?” I asked before I could stop myself. He looked at me. His expression unreadable. “Yes.” My heart skipped. A strange mix of emotions rushed through me. Something else I couldn’t name. Inside, everything was quiet. Calm. The noise from outside faded away. It felt… safe. In a way I wasn’t used to. Kael stopped walking. Then turned to face me fully. “You should rest,” he said. I nodded slowly. But I didn’t move. Because there was still one question burning inside me. “Why did you really bring me here?” I asked. He didn’t answer immediately. His eyes stayed on mine. Deep. Searching. Then he stepped closer. Not too close. But enough that I could feel his presence again. Stronger. Warmer. “Because you are mine,” he said quietly. My breath caught. The words were simple. But they carried weight. Meaning. Something deeper than just a bond. “But…” he continued, his voice lowering slightly, “this world will not accept you easily.” I already knew that. Nyra made sure of it. “The moment I claimed you,” he added, “you became a target.” My heart dropped slightly. “A target?” I repeated. He nodded. “There are those who will challenge you.” “For what?” “For your place beside me.” My stomach tightened. A challenge. A fight I wasn’t ready for. “And if I fail?” I asked softly. Kael’s gaze didn’t waver. “Then they will take that place from you.” Silence filled the room. The reality of my situation settled heavily on my shoulders. This wasn’t just about surviving anymore. This was about proving I belonged. In a world that didn’t want me. Before I could say anything else… A loud knock echoed through the room. “Enter,” he said. The door opened. And Nyra stepped inside. Of course it was her. Her eyes moved between us. Then settled on me. “Sorry to interrupt,” she said, though her tone didn’t sound sorry at all. Kael crossed his arms slightly. “What is it?” Nyra’s lips curved faintly. “There’s been a request.” “A request?” Kael repeated. “Yes.” Her gaze sharpened. “A challenge has already been issued.” My heart stopped. “So soon?” Kael’s voice turned cold. Nyra nodded. “They didn’t waste time.” My hands clenched slightly at my sides. A challenge. Already. I wasn’t even settled. I didn’t even understand this world yet. “Who?” Kael asked. Nyra’s eyes flicked to me. Then back to him. “Someone who believes your mate is… unworthy.” Of course. That word again. Unworthy. Nyra took a step forward. And then said the name. “Varek.” The moment the name left her lips… Kael’s entire expression changed. His jaw tightened. His eyes darkened. And for the first time… I saw something close to concern in his gaze. “Declined,” he said immediately. Nyra shook her head slowly. “You know that’s not how it works.” Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. My heart began to r ace again. “What… what happens now?” I asked quietly. Nyra looked at me. This time… not cold. “Now?” she said. Her voice dropped. “You either prove you deserve to stand beside the Lycan King…” She paused. And her next words felt like a sentence. “Or you don’t survive your first challenge.”
