When Aurora followed him, she expected to see Zayne standing up for her.
But the scene in front of her made her blood run cold.
Anya was sobbing against Zayne's chest, tears streaming down her face.
And Zayne had his arms wrapped around her, gently patting her back.
Rage flared up inside Aurora. Her whole body trembled with it.
She rushed over and grabbed Zayne's arm, her voice hoarse. "Zayne, this is you getting justice for me? Is this some kind of joke? Or am I already dead to you?"
Zayne's face hardened. He yanked his arm away as if her touch burned him.
His voice was ice. "Aurora, you're the one who's gone too far."
Aurora's eyes went wide. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What did you just say?"
Zayne carefully took Anya's wrist and held it up.
There was a thick bandage wrapped around it.
Anya looked at Aurora with fear and resentment in her eyes.
"Aurora." Zayne's voice was heavy with disappointment and exhaustion. "I know you've been convinced that something's going on between Anya and me. I know you've resented her for it. But hiring a bunch of men to assault her? Forcing her to take explicit photos? If Anya hadn't fought them off... do you think they would've let her go?"
He clenched his jaw. His eyes held nothing but pain and disgust. "Aurora, I... I don't even know who you are anymore."
Aurora stared at him, disbelief washing over her. Her heart felt like ice. "Zayne, can you... Can you at least get your facts straight before you blame me? Can't you see how fake she's being? A few tears, and you buy it all?"
Before she could say more, Anya dropped to her knees with a thud.
She grabbed Aurora's clothes, sobbing uncontrollably. "Aurora, please, I'm begging you. Leave me alone. I know I messed up. I never meant to hurt you. I never tried to take Zayne from you. But destroying my reputation like this? You know how important that is to a woman? Please, just stop doing these things behind his back..."
As she spoke, she shot Aurora a look, defiant and mocking.
Aurora's fists clenched so tight her nails bit into her palms. The pain was sharp.
She couldn't hold back anymore. She raised her hand, ready to slap the hypocrisy right off Anya's face and show her she wasn't falling for it.
But before her hand came down, Zayne grabbed it, hard.
His eyes were cold as he stared her down. "What now? Someone caught you, so now you're angry? Or do you just not think ruining someone is a big deal?"
He paused, offering a cruel smile. "Fine then. Why don't you go through exactly what Anya went through? Consider it... an apology."
Aurora's eyes flew open in horror. Before she could even process what he meant, several men came out of nowhere. Rough hands grabbed her arms.
They shoved her into a dark room nearby and slammed the door shut.
The men grinned at her, then started to tear at her clothes.
Her heart ripped apart inside her. 'The man I love let those thugs do this to me!'
Despair crashed over her like a wave. Right before they took everything from her, she found the strength.
She shoved one of the men away, ran straight for the large window, and threw herself through it.
A heavy thud rang out.
Aurora hit the dirt of a second-floor planter bed.
Pain exploded through her body. Every bone felt shattered.
Right before everything went dark, one last thought floated through her mind. 'Am I... dying?'
