Chapter 3

1041 Words
Layla's fingers trembled as she clutched the knife tighter, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. Her mind raced, flashing between the nightmare she had just stumbled upon and the need to survive. Mia's lifeless body, slashed and torn beyond recognition, lay crumpled on the floor as the creature hovered over it. Her breath hitched, threatening to betray her presence. The creature's head twitched, as if sensing her hesitation. Layla's legs felt like lead, frozen in place. She had faced horrors before, fought her way through blood-soaked streets, but this... this thing was different. Its glowing red eyes locked onto hers, sending a chill down her spine. Suddenly, the silence was broken by a low growl. The creature hunched, preparing to lunge. Instinct took over. Layla dashed toward the kitchen, her knife held high, the scraping sound of claws behind her echoing in the confined space. She slammed the door shut, but the thud of something heavy hitting it a moment later told her it wouldn't hold for long. She fumbled with the lock, her breath quick and ragged. Through the crack in the door, she could hear the creature pacing, its breath ragged and hungry, the doorframe creaking under the pressure of its movements. Her thoughts raced—was this what Mia had tried to warn her about? Was this why she was supposed to leave with Mia, Max, and the others? Layla scanned the room, looking for something, anything to defend herself. Her eyes landed on the back window. If she could just get out, find Max, maybe there was still a chance to regroup and warn the others. Grabbing a nearby chair, she smashed it against the window, the glass shattering into jagged pieces. The noise was deafening, and she didn't have time to care if it drew more of those things. She threw her leg through the window, glass cutting into her skin as she stumbled out into the dark alleyway behind the house. The creature roared in fury, and Layla's pulse spiked. She didn't dare look back as she took off into the night. The cold air cut across her face like knives, but the burning in her lungs kept her moving. Everything felt wrong. The streets, usually quiet at this time, seemed to whisper with unseen eyes. Blood smeared the pavement, and shadows danced in the corners of her vision. She could feel it—something was closing in on her. Not just the creature, but the world itself, as if the ground beneath her was rotting, pulling her toward an abyss. She turned a corner and froze. Standing in the middle of the street was Max, his silhouette framed against the backdrop of a flickering streetlamp. Relief washed over her, but it was short-lived. Max's face was grim, his eyes scanning her with a mixture of concern and knowing. "You shouldn't have stayed behind," Max said, his voice a low rumble. He didn't move toward her, didn't offer comfort. His expression told her everything she needed to know—he was already prepared for the worst. "I didn't know... Mia... she's..." Layla's words faltered, the image of Mia's mangled body flashing before her eyes. She fought back the tears, forcing them down. Max nodded slowly; his jaw clenched. "I know. The others are already at the rendezvous point. We need to move." Before Layla could respond, a guttural snarl echoed through the alleyway behind her. She turned just in time to see the creature sprinting toward them, its glowing eyes locked on her like a predator zeroing in on its prey. Max stepped forward, drawing his weapon—a machete stained with dark, crusted blood. "Go! Get to the community gates. I'll handle this." "Max, no—" Layla started, but he cut her off with a sharp glare. "Now!" Layla's legs moved before her mind could catch up. She ran, her feet pounding against the pavement as Max charged toward the creature. The sound of metal slicing through flesh reached her ears, followed by an inhuman screech that sent shivers down her spine. She didn't look back. The gates of the community loomed ahead, and as she approached, the guards rushed to open them, their faces pale and strained. Inside, the once peaceful compound felt like a prison, the tall walls suffocating her. Max's words echoed in her mind: We're running out of time. As she crossed the threshold, gasping for breath, the gates slammed shut behind her, the echo reverberating through the compound. Layla stumbled into the central square, where a group had gathered, their faces painted with a mixture of fear and exhaustion. They turned to her; eyes filled with questions she wasn't ready to answer. Her throat tightened. The air felt thick, and the weight of the world pressed down on her chest. She glanced at the faces around her, searching for familiarity, for some kind of hope. But all she found was despair. And in that moment, she realized something horrifying—there was no safety here. Nowhere left to run. A figure stepped forward from the crowd, his dark eyes steady and cold. "Layla, what happened out there?" It was the community's second-in-command, Derrick, his voice as emotionless as ever. Layla's mouth was dry, her mind racing, but she couldn't avoid the truth. "Mia's gone," she whispered, her voice shaking. "Something... some thing killed her." The murmurs started immediately, panic rippling through the crowd like wildfire. Derrick's expression didn't change, but there was something darker in his gaze now. "And Max?" Layla hesitated, her heart sinking. "He... stayed behind." The air grew colder, as if the very world was reacting to her words. Derrick stared at her for a long moment, then turned to the others. "Lock down the gates. Double the guards. No one leaves the perimeter until we know exactly what we're dealing with." The crowd dispersed, leaving Layla standing alone in the middle of the square. The wind howled through the compound, carrying with it the distant growl of something far worse than death. In the darkness, Layla heard it again—the whisper of something lurking, something watching. And this time, she knew. There was no running. No hiding. The nightmare had only just begun.
