Chapter 3 Fault Lines

877 Words
Years passed. Now here I am. Pulling into the driveway. I needed a shower. After working in the doctor’s office all day. Dr. Snyder is a wonderful pediatrician. Walking into the house. “Hey honey. How was your day?” Chet walked up to me. Giving me a peck. “Really good. How was your day?” I asked. “Good, why don’t you get ready? We can go have dinner with the neighbors.” Chet runs his soft hands up and down my arms. Making me smile. The man always wore polos and khakis. Total contrast to my former life. Which I loved. He was neatly shaved. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a five o’clock shadow on Chet. Perfect white smile, chiseled chin. Blue eyes. With lightly curly blonde hair. I went and took a quick shower. Then I got dressed in a sun dress. Never used to wear these. But I am determined to let go of my past life. When I was dressed. As well as wearing a pair of flats. I went downstairs. Chet who was on his phone. Slipped it back into his pocket. “Are you ready, Honey?” Chet questioned me. I give a nod. Chet looks me up and down. “Are you sure about this dress?” Chet looks at it. As his lips press into a thin line. I look at myself. “Is there something wrong with it?” I asked, wondering. “It’s fine, it’s just… Don’t you think your hips are a little too big for this one?” Chet questioned. I was shocked. I’ve been dieting as of late. Chet said we should start eating healthier. So, we look good in the wedding photos. So, that way when we show our children one day. We can show we had self-control. I didn’t like how he put it. But I agreed. Chet is into fitness. He had more shoes than I did. Especially when it came to trainers. “I think I look good. My hips have even slimmed down,” I explained. Chet looks at his watch. “It will have to do. Since we’re going to be late.” Chet didn’t look pleased. It hurt. But I didn’t say anything. I know Chet cares. But it still hurts. Walking out the door. Chet took me by the hand. “Just as a heads-up. The neighbors are interesting. But good people.” Chet tells me. I give a questioning look. When Chet pushed the doorbell. A woman with fire red, with hints of yellow and orange in her hair. Answers the door. Wearing shorts that were incredibly short. As well a tight shirt. “Oh, hi Chet.” The woman greeted him. Her eyes seem to shine when she sees him. “Hey Spark, I want you to meet my fiancée, Ava.” The woman realized I was there. Her smile faltered. Just as I was thinking, that name seemed like a road name. I never met the woman. But you could see it in her eyes. She didn't want me there. Like I insulted her. By showing up with MY FIANCÉE. “Baby.” I hear a strong voice call out. “Baby, Chet and his fiancée are here, Ana,” Spark said. Giving a light smile. But I saw the smirk. She gave. The satisfaction of getting my name wrong. “It’s Ava, actually.” Chet gave my hand a squeeze, getting my attention. “Well come in.” I hear the male voice. Spark walked into the house. “Don’t correct. It was a mistake.” That made me frown again. Chet whispered with a hint of anger in his tone. “I was just letting her know my name. I know it was a mistake.” I stood up for myself. When I walk in. A man wearing a cut for the Razor Riders. Was there. I mentally curse. Spark's smile faltered the second her eyes landed on Chet. It was quick. Like she was disappointed it wasn't just the two of them. So quickly, I probably would've missed it if I hadn't been looking directly at her. Then her eyes moved to me. “Ana, this is my man, Blaze.” Spark knew she was purposely disrespecting me. But covered it with innocence. “It's Ava, actually.” I gave her a polite smile before holding my hand out toward Blaze. “Nice to meet you.” “You too.” Blaze shook my hand. “Sorry.” Spark laughed lightly. “Ava.” Something about her laugh felt off. I've never crossed paths with this woman. But she obviously has a problem with me. Chet's hand settled against my lower back. “Don't correct her. It was a mistake.” I turned my head toward him. “I was just telling her my name.” His fingers pressed harder against my back. “And now she knows.” My stomach tightened. Why was he making this into something? “Come on,” Spark waved to us further inside. “Dinner should be ready soon.” As we followed her, I caught Spark looking back. Not at me. At Chet. Chet quickly looked away. I frowned. Weird.
