Chapter 13A young uniformed officer arrived to collect Angela and, when he rang the doorbell, Rex barked as if they were under siege. “Good boy, that's right, you tell him,” Bobby said, proudly. “He's a great guard dog, but don't worry, he won't hurt you,” he assured the young policeman when he let him in. “I'll take your word for it,” the officer replied. Meanwhile he didn't offer Rex his hand to sniff, even after Bobby suggested it, and he stood in the hall with his back to the wall never taking his eyes off the dog. Sensing the upper hand, Rex let out a low growl every time the young man moved. After a false start, because Angela couldn't locate her house keys, the policeman audibly sighed with relief when he and Angela eventually left the house and were on their way to the hospital.
