Chapter 5When John got on the bus he sat near the front because he wanted to be able to get off quickly when God sent him a sign. The journey was slow as at every stop on the way, somebody got on or off. John wasn't used to being in contact with so many people. They fascinated him. As the bus continued past Muirend, then Cathcart, he stared out of the window at the streets full of tenements. The buildings seemed cleaner than he'd remembered. In the years while he'd been away they'd been stone-cleaned and refurbished and now, instead of the sooty black caused by decades of smoke and grime, the sandstone was a warm red. As the bus passed Queen's Park and turned into Victoria Road, John suddenly saw the sign he'd been waiting for. Walking along the street were two nuns. They stopped to speak
