The Coronation of the Princess

Kimberly POV “Calm down, Kimberly. Everything will be alright.” We are in my room. I had just been dressed into a ballgown. My wavy golden hair is up in a tight bun, my dark brown eyes enhanced with eyeliner and mascara, my pink plump lips tainted with lip balm. I looked like a stunner, especially with my high cheekbones. “I don’t know, Mom. You know that I’m not cut for this. Do I have to do this? I’m okay without a title. And now, I’m sure Alice will never talk to me. She was already thinking that I’m taking her father away from her. And now—” “Stop walking in circles, Kimberly! I’m getting dizzy watching you! Won’t you please sit down? Come here, my princess.” Princess!? I don’t want that name! I have been nervous starting from the second I woke up today. My mom just got married to our king, King Edward, making her our new Queen. They have a very romantic story, which started when they met at a town celebration a year ago. King Edward had joined the celebration and was immediately smitten with my Mom, who was dancing with me at the plaza. He started the courtship and after six months; he asked Mom for her hand. He asked me first, of course. The King is not that bad and actually; it impressed me when he asked me first in private, without Mom knowing. I wanted Mom to have her happily ever after story, so I gave them my blessing. I’m not that selfish. And knowing how Mom had sacrificed to protect me and give me a better future, it was time for me to give back to her. Mom, or Martha, is not really my biological mother. And I’m not the typical teenager everyone thought me to be. I’m a witch. My parents, a wizard and a witch, were both murdered when I was a baby. I was brought up knowing Martha was not my biological mother, but I embraced her like one. She brought me out of our previous residence and lived in another country, a human kingdom, to start anew. She knew no one from that land. But with her courage, determination, and resourcefulness, we lived our lives peacefully. Until one day, when I was eight years old, I have discovered that I can do magic. All I knew was that Mom was not my real mother and that my actual parents were murdered years ago. I knew nothing about being a witch. Mom was cooking dinner while I was doing my homework when I was eight years old. It was getting cold. Winter was coming, but Mom didn’t want to use the last of our woodpile. She was saving it in case a storm hits us. With me wanting to feel warm, I was looking at our furnace, imagining fire in it. And voila! Fire lit up in it! I thought I would impress Mom, but she went into panic mode. Right then and there she revealed to me everything. That I am a witch, born to a wizard and witch. She thought I’m still too young to understand and that she was just waiting for me to be at least twelve or ten. But I was often told that I am wise beyond my age. The next thing I knew, she was telling me something about a prophecy that someone will harm me and I immediately understood why she was panicking. I was not surprised to be hearing about witches and wizards. Though we were in mostly human territory, a few non-human beings were also living in the vicinity. There are a few witches in the country. I knew also that there is a small werewolf pack living in the woods just outside our town. But we all live peacefully and harmoniously. Starting that day, Mom forbade me to use magic, unless it was life and death situation for me. She remembered, as well, that the night my parents were murdered, she got a call from my witch mom, saying that they will be casting a protective spell on me. Cast or not, Mom still did not want me to use magic. As an obedient and understanding child, I did what I was told to do. I have to behave as humanly as possible. As I sat beside Mom on my bed, she pulled me gently and put my head on her shoulder. She rubbed my arm to comfort me. “I am beginning to think, Kimberly, that this is happening to you in line with the prophecy as told by the oracle.” “What are you talking about, Mom?” I pulled back, sat up straight and then narrowed my eyes at her. “Someone in this palace wants to kill me?” “No, not that. There’s more to the prophecy.” “What? And you did not tell me about it?” “Because you were too young to understand.” “But I thought I was wise for my age. Everybody told me so.” “Naïve and innocent.” She smiled at me. “You were and you still are wise, but I didn’t want to scare you, too.” “As if someone wanting to kill me is not scary enough.” Mom heaved a sigh before reciting the prophecy. “A child was born on the day of Winter Solstice, Will die before she gets to one. A warlock will be the reason, In the future will come back for treason. But then she will have a chance, Be powerful, forward, and beyond. Will rule the lands of many, Together with her mates of royalty.” “What was that again?” That was the first time I heard of the prophecy. Mom heaved another sigh and got a notepad from my desk and wrote on it. “This is the complete prophecy, as I remember. It was etched in my memory.” I’ve read the prophecy again and again until I had it memorized. “I was born on the winter solstice. I was about to die before I was one-year-old, so that was my chance. It was a warlock who was about to kill me, but instead killed my parents. All that happened already. So, what is still to happen is for the warlock to return, and then he will be planning against the current rulers. Then I will rule over lands with my mates who are of royal blood.” I was thinking out loud. “It’s not far off now that you will be married to a royal.” “Wait, Mom, it said mates. Do I get married twice? I know I cannot marry two men at once.” “It was the way your Mom told me the prophecy. Up to until now, I still do not understand.” “Maybe my first husband will die, then I will marry another royalty?” “Perhaps. But what I wanted to tell you, Kimberly, is that everything that is happening must be in accordance with the prophecy. I just want you to meet your mate before you turn twenty-one. The protective spell was supposed to work until you turn twenty-one. And before that, you have to meet your life partner.” “Goodness, Mom. Why are you telling me all this right now? You could have told me about this tomorrow. This is like a bomb you had just put in my brain.” “Sorry about that, Kimberly. I was just trying to keep your mind off the coronation.” She told me sheepishly. The reason I was so nervous was because today is my coronation as the new princess. The King had not only married my Mom, but he also adopted me, to the dismay and disappointment of his only daughter, Alice. Being adopted means I get to have the title of a princess. Alice will be sixteen soon, same as me, but I will turn sixteen by the end of the year. From what I’ve heard, she got mad at her father for courting a commoner, and someone who has a child. Besides having to adjust to a new mother, she also had to adjust to having a step-sister. Having been born spoiled and not having to share anything with anyone, I think she’s afraid that we will get all her father’s attention and possession. But my Mom and I are nothing like that. We do not need their riches. I stared at the ceiling before heaving a sigh. “Don’t forget to make that paper disappear. Don’t let anyone see that.” Mom reminded me. And so, in one swift move, I burned the paper in my hand, with the ashes disintegrating into the air. Mom frowned at me. “Mom, chillax, it’s just minor magic.” She lets me do basic magic now, but only in private. Aside from Mom and me, King Edward was also let into our secret. He already knows that I’m a witch and was sworn to secrecy. Mom and I talked about this, and I agreed with her. She doesn’t want to lie to the King about me, because the King would be taking an enormous risk if he was to take us inside the palace. Mom said if the King did not approve, she would have to break up with him and we have to move to another place. However, the King really loves Mom and had also promised her he would also take care of me. A knock on the door interrupted the Mom-and-daughter moment. “Come in,” Mom called out. “Hey.” King Edward popped his head inside. I still call him King Edward, even though he had already told me to call him Dad. “Hi.” Mom smiled sweetly, then walked towards the King and uhm… kissed him. I’m still not used to seeing them so sweet together, which is most of the time. “Are you two done with your small talk?” He asked as he placed his hands on Mom’s waist. “Yes, we had just finished.” “Good. The program is about to start, my Queen.” He then looked at me, reaching out his hand for mine. “You look so beautiful, Kimberly. Shall we, my princess?” “And now, we present to you the new princess of the Kingdom of Samara, Princess Kimberly.” The crowd applauded and cheered. I smiled nervously and waved to the people who had attended the coronation at the palace. I had taken a fast course on how to act like a princess a week ago, and I would like to think it helped me this evening. I could say that I was having a great time with the dinner after the coronation, until I had to face Alice, with her eyes throwing daggers at me.
