Getting to know each other (Part 3)

Kimberly POV “So, what do you want to know?” River said as he placed his room key on the key hooks by the door. We had just entered River’s room, which was painted blue and gray, same as mine. The beddings were of the hues of blue. I looked around and found River to be neat. Nothing much to see but a shoe rack at the corner by the door, his study table with a few books, and his king-sized bed at the farther back of the room. I wonder what color Ryder’s room is. “I like the colors. Is blue your favorite color?” I knew River was asking about what I wanted to know about werewolves, but I also wanted to know him more on a personal note. “Yes, my favorite is blue. Guess what Ryder’s favorite color is.” River took his shoes off followed by Ryder while I just took off inside and browsed around the room. I went back to the door and also took off my shoes. “I’m sorry about that.” I felt guilty as River might be a neat freak. “No. It’s okay.” He said gently. But then Ryder was looking at me like he was waiting for me to say something. “Oh. I guess Ryder’s favorite color is green?” It was the color of his eyes anyway. “Not bad, princess. You got it right on the first time.” He shrugged his shoulders and walked to River’s bed and sat at the edge. “What do you know about werewolves? You must have some information.” River sat at the swiveling chair he had by his study table. I was left standing in the middle of the room and I didn’t know where to sit. “Oh, you can sit on the bed. Feel at home. You can lie down if you feel like it.” I blushed at the attention these two boys were giving me. I was not used to be in an enclosed space with two gorgeous boys who I barely knew. I sat down on River’s bed by the headboard. “I have never come across a werewolf but I have heard about them. I think there was a pack where we used to live. There are few, I think, who lived in our kingdom. But I am not that sure. What I knew is werewolves have heightened senses.” “That was why you made the conclusion earlier,” Ryder smirked. “Yes.” I nodded. “Are there also vampires enrolled in the academy?” “Rare. They usually keep to themselves. But there was a couple of vampires last year. Both of them had graduated. For this year, I don’t know if there were vampires.” It was Ryder who answered. I liked that we were having a normal conversation. He could be nice if he wanted to. Earlier he was sort of nasty to me. “So, about werewolves. Tell me about them. From the start. Or at least the basics.” River cleared his throat as if preparing for a long lesson. “Werewolves or any other weres were created by the Moon Goddess or whom we also call as Luna. Werewolves live in packs with an Alpha leading the pack together with his Beta and Gamma. The next in succession would be Delta but in some packs, there was no need for a Delta. He could be the Head Warrior.” “Our first shift happens when we reach the age of eighteen and that was also the age when we can find our fated mate.” “Mate? As in soulmate?” I cut in. “Yes. The one that the Moon Goddess has gifted you to be with for the rest of your life.” It was weird but River and Ryder were looking at me intently at that moment as if they were awaiting my reaction. “That is cool to have someone created for you already. However, the challenge is looking for your mate if he or she is not in your pack.” Then an idea also followed. “And what if you the mates have differences? Can they choose not to be together?” River and Ryder looked at each other. “You are smart, princess. That is a challenge indeed, looking for your fated mate. About having differences, no matter what, mates will feel this pull towards each other. You cannot live without each other.” “Oh. That is interesting.” I thought for a moment then a question filled my head. “Wait. You said you can shift at the age of eighteen. Have you shifted?” “No. Not yet. We are only seventeen.” River said. “We will be eighteen next year.” “You are only seventeen?” I exclaimed. I became aware of my action and immediately put my hands over my mouth. I was overreacting. “What? Do we look older?” Ryder asked sarcastically. “No. It was just that…” I was thinking of what to reply to him. “You are a year early. I thought seniors are supposed to be eighteen already. You must have studied early or you were accelerated for being so smart.” Those seemed to be good excuses. River laughed at my reasons. I was glad that he was kind. “Yes, we were accelerated during our primary school. Maybe it was the smarts or our parents' status or perhaps both.” “You will be Alphas.” I gasped. “We are to follow our father’s footsteps. We will soon be ruling over the werewolf kingdom.” Oh, f**k. They are princes. “You must be looking forward to shifting and to finding your mate.” “We are.” Ryder was the first one to answer. “We will not be able to rule if we will not meet our mate.” River added. “So if you haven’t met your mate, what will happen?” Werewolves were really fascinating to study. “We might choose our mate,” Ryder said abruptly. “Oh, you could do that?” “Yes.” He said nodding. “But it will not be the same as having your fated mate.” “Then I wish for you to meet your fated mate.”
